2014 Press Releases, Acuity, BlackStrom, Carbonite, DashBoard, Inception, Nielsen, NK, openGear, OverDrive, Robotics, XPressionon July 15th, 2014

Tuesday July 15, 2014 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] – Since last IBC, Ross has expanded dramatically with 4 corporate acquisitions in the areas of routing, news and prompting software, augmented reality and mobile production and a wide array of new production focused products and services as well as the addition of almost 100 new employees.  This IBC, Ross is celebrating its 40th anniversary, sporting a new look with a modernized corporate logo and the updated tagline: “Production Technology Experts”.  Following is a brief outline of just some of the things to expect from Ross on the stand at IBC in September – and as always, there will be a few last minute surprises announced closer to show time.

openTruck™ – Next Generation Mobile Production
openTruck™ brings innovation to mobile production by providing a standardized yet customizable way to design a new generation of cost-effective remote-production vehicles that deliver the highest quality video and audio content from sports and other live events. A mobile production vehicle, built to the openTruck specifications will be front and center on the Ross stand at IBC.

Acuity – Breakthrough High End Production Switching
Introduced at NAB 2014 and now fully released and shipping, the Acuity production switcher is the latest large production switcher platform. It delivers fast, efficient and error-free production for all formats including UHD (4K) and is ergonomically perfect and stunningly beautiful. The culmination of 40-years’ production switcher design experience, Acuity combines seemingly limitless production power with aesthetic beauty and unprecedented connectivity. No matter what your vision is for the future of your production facility, Acuity will help you lead the way.

Carbonite – The World’s Most Popular Mid-Sized Production Switcher
The award-winning Carbonite production switcher now has more choice and flexibility than ever before with 3G and Advanced UHD (4K) production shipping on new systems and also available to all Carbonite customers through free software upgrades.  These features enable Carbonite to be switched to 3G (1080P 50 or 60 (59.94)) and open the door to the very latest production format: UHDTV (4K) – a capability used by Globosat, Brazil in the recent FIFA World Cup.

Another unexpected free software upgrade to Carbonite is 2.5 ME operation, with two new 3 ME panels available to provide direct access to this additional horsepower—the 3S and 3X— bringing the total number of Carbonite control panel choices to nine.

Inception – The Modern Newsroom Computer System
Inception is “the new kid in town” in newsroom editorial systems and has made a big impression since its introduction last IBC, winning major industry awards for the innovative approach it takes to creating multi-platform content.  Inception enables your operation to truly embrace social media and the web – making them equal partners alongside your linear channel in your content creation efforts.  Designed to handle the modern needs of News, Sports and Entertainment production, Inception is a must see at IBC this year.

Inception Social – Social Media Management Made Easy
Inception Social is a social media management system that can either work standalone or can be “plugged in” to an existing newsroom computer system.  In addition to news environments, Inception Social has found a place in live event social media management for entertainment productions and sports where it provides a tight link between audience feedback (tweets, polls and pictures) and live on-air production graphics.

XPression – The New Standard in Real-Time Motion Graphics
XPression keeps getting more powerful and flexible with solutions that meet virtually every type of onscreen live graphics need—from character generation to virtual sets and augmented reality.  XPression has added Visual Scripting, making the creation of dynamic, data-driven graphics much faster and easier.   Visual Scripting complements XPressions powerful scripting capability with an intuitive drag and drop operator user interface eliminating the need to write programming scripts in most cases.

A few more new solutions planned for the XPression family at IBC this year include:

  • XPression Tick-it and Tick-it Solo: Next-generation ticker systems with collaborative browser-based data entry and scheduling.
  • XPression Brand-it: Multi-channel automated branding workflow server for program lineups, snipes and more.
  • XPression Studio and BlueBox GO!: Powerful XPression solutions for Thunderbolt™ laptops.

Ross Virtual Solutions – Great Looking Virtual and Augmented Reality
Ross Virtual Solutions will be demonstrating The Studio of the Future – Available Today, a turnkey solution that makes it easy to quickly deploy a virtual set or add augmented reality elements to an existing set. Ross Video is the only company in the broadcast industry that’s able to offer a single-vendor turnkey AR/VS studio solution, including the equipment you need as well as design services for virtual sets, virtual set extensions, and augmented reality 3D design elements. Stop by and see a demo of what the state-of-the-art studio of the future looks like.

Furio RC and Furio Robo – Advanced Track Based Robotic Camera Systems
Ross Video’s rail-based remote-control camera system, Furio RC, has a new control option that makes controlling the Furio similar to controlling a manual camera. The Furio Panbar controller has a fluid head for pan, tilt, zoom and focus, and foot pedals for dolly and lift, making it easier to get those dramatic production shots the Furio RC is famous for. A new collision avoidance option enables two Furio Robo Systems to safely share a single track, maximizing flexibility and the ability to attain the best camera shots.

OverDrive Caprica – Automated Production
OverDrive, the worlds most popular system for automating news production is now shipping with a new version called OverDrive Caprica which adds support for 3rd party (non-Ross) production switchers.  This allows customers with installed legacy production switchers to make the move to automation without having to replace their production switcher.

MC1 – The Affordable Master Control Solution
The MC1 simple, robust and affordable Master Control System has added an optional physical control panel that is fully customizable and supports scalable multi-channel operations. The MC1 System is now also available as a standalone openGear module for channel branding and emergency alert system insertion.

openGear 3.0 – The World’s Only Open Terminal Equipment Platform
Ross will be demonstrating the openGear 3.0 frame, this third generation open frame standard offers increased density, power, cooling and advanced network control while maintaining backward compatibility with previous generation openGear cards.  Earlier this year, the openGear ecosystem passed 60 partner companies continuing to broaden the range of available openGear compliant solutions.

Ross openGear portfolio has added a 3G advanced VANC data processor with support for SCTE 104 Digital Program Insertion (DPI); a 3G A/V Frame Synchronizer with audio embedding/de-embedding capabilities; and a fiber optic 3G A/V Frame Synchronizer with audio embedding/ de-embedding support making it ideal for mixed format Electrical / Optical Installations.

SRG-4400 Master Sync and Reference Generator
New since last IBC is the SRG-4400 Master Sync and Reference, a state of the art master reference and 3G/HD/SD SDI test signal generator designed for performance and reliability. With front swappable redundant power supplies and an optional auto changeover unit, the SRG-4400 provides the features and reliability needed in a modern facility timing system.

NK Series Routing Systems
New in NK Series Routing includes customer definable DashBoard-based soft panels – making router control available from any computer.  These CustomPanels can combine control of a variety of Ross and 3rd party equipment at the same time – streamlining user operation.

Nielsen Watermarks – Audience Measurement Systems
Ross is Nielsen’s partner in providing and supporting the equipment needed by broadcasters to insert Nielsen Watermarks for audience measurement. Ross now offers the NWE-TS which can watermark signals in the compressed domain. The NWE-TS accepts ATSC ASI transport streams and will watermark up to 10 channels simultaneously.

Black Storm – Video Clip Player
At IBC this year, BlackStorm adds support for Avid’s DNxHD codec offering smoother workflow for Avid-centric environments.

DashBoard – Facility Control and Monitoring
DashBoard is Ross’ Facility Control and Monitoring System and is available for free download from the Ross Video website.  DashBoard 6.2, now in beta, will launch at IBC and includes some big upgrades to the system including a more sophisticated version of the popular PanelBuilder feature.  PanelBuilder allows the easy creation of customized touch screen control panels that can take a complex operation and make it simple for the operator.   PanelBuilder can include individual buttons, sliders and indicators from any openGear, DashBoard Connect and Ross Video product as well as a number of 3rd party devices – combining these with scripting intelligence in powerful and unique ways.

Ross Video’s Carbonite Used to Give Every Member of the Congregation a Front Row Seat

2014 Press Releases, Carboniteon May 26th, 2014

Influencers Church connects congregations in Australia and the United States

Monday, May 26, 2014 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] – Influencers Church has a vibrant, growing congregation spread across four campuses and two countries: three in Adelaide, Australia, and one in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States. The Church uses Ross Video’s Carbonite Production Switcher to cut live video to its I-Mag screens and give every member of the congregation in its 3,000-seat main auditorium in Paradise, Australia, a memorable, front-row experience. Carbonite is also used to stream live video to the Church’s other campuses in Australia and the United States, and enable the congregations to share live moments with each other despite being in different campuses and countries.

“In 2013, we were planning to move from an outside-broadcast truck to a studio install. I went through a lengthy selection process, but was disappointed with the lack of support I received from many vendors,” said Tristan Hebart, TV and Production Technician at Influencers Church. “I was impressed by Ross Video, though, and its products and services. Carbonite’s flexibility, for example, gave us the ability to expand what we do, and its extensive features and options meant I could buy one switcher rather multiple different pieces of equipment. Team Ross was also extremely helpful and went above and beyond, helping in ways I never imagined.”

The Carbonite switcher enables Influencers Church to create custom panels and switch the live stream feeds being sent to the different campuses. The Church also uses the Carbonite to deliver integrated systems, such as lower thirds, and do a live cut for DVDs that are sold straight after the service. Being able to map tally to the auxiliaries, as well as program and preview buses helps show operators when they are live and when they’re being recorded by triggering two different coloured tallies.

“Carbonite is head and shoulders above our previous switcher, and an invaluable tool for connecting our congregations to our church and each other,” continued Hebart. “Carbonite has the features I’ve needed to pull off every creative idea we’ve had to date, including frame accurate triggering, and syncing large-scale videos with live music. I also love that Ross is continually bringing out new, free updates, which contain so many great features, for its hardware products like Carbonite.”

Mongolia National Broadcaster Upgrades Facility
and Programming with Ross

2014 Press Releases, Carbonite, Inception, NK, openGear, XPressionon April 21st, 2014

Monday, April 21st, 2014 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] - Mongolia National Broadcaster (MNB), a state-funded television channel in Mongolia upgraded from analog to digital broadcasting using Ross Video Production Technology.

MNBMNB wanted to provide their viewers with a better experience, while changing the look and feel of their programming. MNB accepted Global Telecom’s tender and began their introduction to Ross Video’s Carbonite Production Switcher, XPression Character Generator and Graphics System, Inception News Newsroom Control System, MC1 Master Control System, openGear Terminal Equipment and NK Series Router.

“Our first experience with Ross Video began 15 years ago with a purchase of an RVS 216A Analog Production Switcher – which still works perfectly to this day,” said Mr. Temuujin. S, Head of Engineering, MNB. “In order for MNB to successfully go digital, we needed to invest in a lot of new equipment. After requesting tenders from local vendors, Global Telecom won with the recommendation of Ross technology – and a decision that has proven to be an easy transition.”

While still awaiting installation of a few products – XPression, NK Series and Inception News – MC1 has proven to be the straightforward master control switcher MNB required. Carbonite is also fulfilling all of their production requirements.

“Carbonite allows us to produce our programs more effectively, as well as plan for more programming moving forward,” continued Mr. Temuujin. “While the initial investment was high, the built-in features such as the Chroma Keyer and MultiViewer saved us money – and space. Our operators are truly enjoying everything Carbonite has to offer and can’t wait for the rest of our Ross equipment to be up and running.

Carbonite 2.5MD / 3G / 4K“These updates make Carbonite the perfect tool for users who want to adopt the very latest full HD progressive standard and make sure their production system investment is protected for years to come,” says Nigel Spratling, Marketing Product Manager for Ross Video. “To upgrade to 3G, users simply download the free software. Once in 3G mode, Carbonite’s MiniMEs can be used for UHD (4K) production by turning on MultiScreen mode. That’s truly remarkable processing power—at zero cost—and yet another innovative first from Ross. No other switcher of this size and price point can offer 3G, let alone 4K at 50 and 60Hz.”

No new hardware is required to switch to 3G. Current Carbonite owners simply have to download the free software. In 3G mode, the number of DVEs is reduced to four from eight, and the maximum number of MultiViewer windows is reduced to 10 from 16, for a total of 20 independent sources across two output heads. 3G signals contain twice the data of standard HD and, as a result, some resource reduction occurs. All other resources remain the same, and MiniMEs, MultiScreen and 2.5ME modes all are accessible.

Carbonite’s MultiScreen mode locks all four MiniME controls together, enabling mixes, cuts and keys to be applied to UHD 3G quad link inputs. While MiniMEs have no preview output, all of the basic switching functions and keying to provide perfectly produced UHD output can be easily and quickly delivered. As many as six UHD quad link sources can be input for UHD program output and, if the quad link format is pixel/line interleave, sources can easily be monitored via standard 1080 displays and Carbonite’s MultiViewers. This quad link format also enables simultaneous UHD and 1080P outputs.

Ross Video’s New @ NAB 2014

2014 Press Releases, Carbonite, Corporate, DashBoard, Inception, Nielsen, NK, openGear, OverDrive, Robotics, Vision, XPressionon February 20th, 2014

Thursday, February 20, 2014 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] Ross Video is celebrating their 40th anniversary at NAB this year with a new corporate logo, a new tag line “Production Technology Experts” and a significantly expanded NAB presence.  The growing range of Ross production technology solutions can be seen at the Ross Booth #N3806 in the North Hall.

As always at Ross, the emphasis is on power and affordability – creating leading edge products at great prices, backed by exceptional support and customer service.  Here’s a preview of some of the things to expect from Ross at NAB this year.  In addition to what follows, Ross is anticipating a few last minute surprises out of their development labs that will be announced closer to show time.

Production Switchers
Vision Tritium, the sweet spot in large production switcher value and performance, makes its North American debut.   Vision Tritium is a full 3MLE modular production switcher packed full of features including: 48 x 32 Multi-Definition inputs and outputs, 6 real 3D DVE’s, 16 channels of internal media stores, 16 keyers, UltraChrome chroma keys, built in Dual Head MultiViewers and a massive list of supported external device controls.

The Tritium processing engine pairs with a stunning Vision series modular 3MLE panel – with a choice of 24 or 32 direct access crosspoint buttons, and featuring Ross’ PanelGlow RGB buttons and DualDisplay touch screen menu system. Tritium is fully upgradable and accepts standard Vision Octane components.

Carbonite – Ross’ breakthrough mid-size production switcher series will show off its latest features, including the award winning MiniME and MultiScreen processing technologies.  Available as a free software upgrade to all Carbonite customers (downloadable from the Ross website), these new features demonstrate the exceptional long-term value in buying Ross.

MiniME’s can be used anywhere in the signal flow – either as pre-keyers or as independent transition engines.  MiniME’s produce a layered composition such as a virtual set background with a chroma key and an OTS DVE.  They can be selected as direct inputs, or as independent keying and transition engines on up to 4 Auxiliary outputs for on-set displays.

MiniME’s live in a resource ‘pool’ and are only assigned when required. Once the transition or effect is completed they are instantly available for use elsewhere. MiniME’s are not like ‘Split ME’s’ or ‘multi program mode ME’s’ where ME resources are divided up and reassigned into smaller sections. MiniME’s are entirely independent devices leaving all standard ME resources available.

MultiScreenTM production is now available directly within a standard Carbonite thanks to Ross’ new MiniME’s. Up to four outputs can be controlled independently off Carbonite’s main ME’s, allowing a single source to be scaled over up to 4 outputs in multiple screen layouts. Keys and DVE’s can also be included to facilitate compelling multiscreen productions. Expensive additional screen processors are no longer required when you’ve got a Carbonite switcher, as bezel compensation and edge blending for multi-projector setups are part of the package – a major system cost saving.

The Carbonite C2S is Ross’ new 24 button, 2ME panel incorporating individual ME Effects Memory keypads.  The C2S is ideal for sport and other productions in which the TD prefers to switch the show directly from the memory keypad. The C2S has all the features of the popular C2M panel, adding a dedicated ME Effects Memory control area in each ME – in addition to the standard global controls. The C2M panel brings the number of Carbonite panel choices to 7, covering a broad range of client needs, space and budgets.

DashBoard Facility Control
DashBoard is Ross’ free facility control software that controls everything from Ross and our openGear and DashBoard Connect partners as well as a variety of other UDP, TCP and HTTP devices.  Version 6.1 will launch at NAB and provides PanelBuilder – the ability for anyone to build purpose built CustomPanels and Automated Workflows.  PanelBuilder makes customized control quick and easy via an intuitive drag and drop mode for building CustomPanels.

OverDrive Automated Production Control
At NAB, OverDrive takes the biggest leap forward since its initial release with the North American debut of OverDrive Caprica – adding the ability to control third party production switchers.   Non-Ross production switcher customers can now enjoy the efficiency and consistency benefits of automating with OverDrive. OverDrive will be paired with Inception News at NAB 2014, showing a complete end-to-end news production workflow.

Inception News & Social
Inception News is Ross’ unique newsroom computer system that blends the needs of traditional linear channel production with the modern requirements of web and social media content publication.    Launched at IBC, this is the first showing of Inception News in North America.  Providing both outbound publication as well as inbound searching and harvesting of social media, Inception is a great tool for your television producers and journalists as well as your social media team.

XPression 3D HD CG & Motion Graphics System
XPression motion graphics now offers solutions for virtually every type of onscreen live graphics requirement – everything from live character generation, to branding, to virtual sets and augmented reality.  In addition to a host of new production features here are some of the new things from XPression this year:

XPression Tick-it and Brand-it are fully-automated, turnkey solutions for local TV and enterprise channel branding.

XPression Prime GO!  a portable solution running on a laptop with full HDSDI I/O.

XPression Template Builder – an application for the creation of graphics outside of NRCS and NLE environments for later incorporation into programs.

XPression Touchscreen and Telestration applications that provide freehand control and drawing capabilities over XPression Scenes. Visual Scripting allows non-programmers to create complex scene interactivity.

XPression Virtual Set & Augmented Reality enhancements including support for Trackmen protocol, CCD chip size selection, 2nd and 4th order spherical lens correction, and global cameras.

Ross and Unreel Virtual Set & Augmented Reality
Ross and our virtual tracking partner Unreel will again be showing a fully turnkey virtual set and augmented reality solution, making it easy for anyone to quickly deploy a virtual set or to add augmented graphics to an existing set.  This year, you’ll have an opportunity to get right on the set and experience what it’s like to be talent in a virtual environment for yourself.

Ross Robotics
Furio RC is Ross’ rail based remote control camera system used on top end stage productions and variety shows.  Furio RC adds a new control option for NAB – Furio Panbar.  The Panbar controller makes controlling Furio RC similar to running a manual camera.  The operator controls a fluid head for pan/tilt/zoom/focus and foot pedals for dolly and lift.  Many operators find this control method more precise, faster and more intuitive – making it easier to get those dramatic production shots that Furio RC is famous for.

The Furio Robo rail based studio system adds a Collision Avoidance option that allows two Furio Robo dolly systems to more easily share a single track during a production while maximizing flexibility in attaining the best camera shots.

Infrastructure – Routing, Terminal Equipment & Nielsen Watermarks
New in the NK Series Routing systems is the NK-144 which can now be upgraded to include the full functionality of up to 2 Carbonite production switchers internally –  becoming a full Carbonite eXtreme.  This revolutionary product combines facility routing with production switching and multi-viewing all in a single rackframe, dramatically simplifying system cabling and distribution.

Another addition to NK is customer definable DashBoard-based soft panels, making router control available from any computer.  These CustomPanels can combine control of a variety of other Ross and 3rd party equipment at the same time – streamlining user operation.

The MC1 simple, robust and affordable Master Control System has added extended EAS interface, multi-channel scalable operations and enhanced graphics capabilities. The MC1 System is now also available as a standalone openGear module for channel branding and EAS insertion.

At last year’s NAB, Ross launched openGear 3.0, the third generation of our openGear frame standard, increasing power and cooling and adding advanced networked control.  The openGear ecosystem now includes 60+ partners and deployed by thousands of clients.   The latest version of DashBoard (free!), mentioned above provides extensive new control features to all openGear products.

Ross has expanded its portfolio in Nielsen Watermarks offerings with the addition of a new transport stream Nielsen Watermarks encoder.  The NWE-TS accepts ATSC ASI transport streams and will watermark up to 10 channels simultaneously.

Ross Mobile Productions
Ross’ production arm, Ross Mobile Productions will launch their new Mobile Production OT1 compact production vehicle. Ross is building a fleet of these vehicles to offer full production packaging and rental services.  OT1 is a platform that Ross will be soon making available detailed designs for so that other truck companies can get on board with this new open standard for truck designs and workflows.

OT1 is designed around a tightly integrated Carbonite Production Switcher and XPression Graphics core. The 10 operator position OT1 platform offers both Fiber and Triax camera capabilities, an advanced communication system, and a dual user 8 channel replay system – incredible power -  all in a Mercedes Sprinter size vehicle.

The OT1 vehicle platform is the first public showing of a truck based on the openTruck™ initiative from Ross and offers a standardized path to designing cost-effective remote production vehicles that enable delivery of high-quality digital content from sports venues and other live events. Taking advantage of interoperable broadcast systems from Ross Video and other leading technology vendors, openTruck offers production vehicle partners access to open protocols, specifications, and schematics for efficient workflows, uncompromising video quality, and rapid event-to-event reconfiguration.

Ross Video Powers beIN Sports Network in the Middle East

2014 Press Releases, Carbonite, Roboticson February 13th, 2014

Iroquois, Ontario, Canada – 12 February 2014 - In 2003 Al Jazeera, the Middle East-based media group, set up a dedicated sports network to televise international sporting events to viewers throughout the Arabian Peninsula. In January 2014, the network was rebranded as beIN Sports and its reach was extended so that it now broadcasts to viewers in France, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the USA and all across the Middle East in Arabic, English, French, Indonesian, Spanish and Cantonese. With its headquarters in Doha, Qatar, the beIN Sports complex is made up of nine separate studios that feature the very latest products from Ross Video, most notably Ross Robotics solutions. Studio 9, the largest studio on the site, features a full Ross Furio robotic camera system with 13 cameras that was supplied and installed by regional systems integration specialist Tek Signals. According to Mr. Muhammad Saeed, Head of the Engineering Section at beIN Sports, the products are in almost constant use:

Furio Robotic Camera Systems - beIN Sports Network

“We have never been busier! There has always been a huge appetite for sport in the Middle East and we are now broadcasting everything from English Premier League football to World Superbikes, international Rugby, European Handball and all the major global sporting tournaments. As a result, our studios have virtually no down time and we have carefully chosen to partner with manufacturers who we know offer a great blend of performance and reliability”.

One of the most popular programmes broadcast from Studio 9 is beIN’s coverage of English Premier League football on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Running throughout the day, the live shows feature multiple anchors and guests situated on various sets around the studio, making for a complex rundown. However, Ross’ Furio robotics system delivers impressive versatility and has allowed directors and operators to create a variety of dynamic panning shots that help keep the show engaging and vibrant. “Working with Ross Video has been an extremely positive experience and we are very pleased with the results”, notes Muhammad Saeed. “The Carbonite switchers have proven incredibly robust, feature-rich and very easy to use and the Furio robotics systems have opened up many new creative possibilities for our team of directors”.

Commenting on the relationship David Dowling, Ross Director of Sales for EMEA, is quick to recognise the investment made by the Al Jazeera group. “The Middle East is a very dynamic market and the growth of beIN Sports over the last couple of years has mirrored the energy and ambition of the region. We’re very proud to be working with such a prominent network in the Middle East and this relationship should send a clear message to other broadcasters in the surrounding area that Ross is now a first-choice brand for the world’s leading media groups. We have the right products, the right people and the right support in place to create valuable partnerships with our customers.”
