Ross Video Introduces Carbonite Black Plus at NAB 2016

2016 Press Releases, Carboniteon April 17th, 2016

Sunday, April 17th, 2016 [Las Vegas, Nevada] – Ross is introducing an even more powerful version of its market leading production switcher at NAB 2016 – the Carbonite Black Plus which contains all the features of Carbonite Black – Plus a bunch more.

The new Carbonite Black Plus is a signal processing marvel. In this newest version all 36 inputs come equipped with Frame Synchronizers, Format converters, Color Correction and Proc amps,  easily handling a wide variety of input signal challenges. In addition to this, Carbonite Black Plus provides Proc amps, Color Correction and Format Conversion on 12 of its 25 outputs. This is perfect functionality for matching on set displays and outputting  multiple formats.

Carbonite Black Plus Chassis

Carbonite Black Plus also adds dramatically more monitoring capability. With this new processing engine there are a total of 5 MultiViewers with up to 16 configurable windows each. This provides 80 windows in total, making it possible to monitor every aspect of a production. All 36 inputs, 22 outputs, the media stores, three MEs and four MiniMEs and aux buses can be monitored – a simply huge advantage! The processing engine includes three new outputs dedicated to MultiViewers, so that main outputs aren’t sacrificed for monitoring.

Of course these new Carbonite Black Plus features are in addition to the 3 full ME’s and 4 MiniME’s, simple 4K production, 1080P 3G, and much – much more found on the existing Carbonite Black processing engine.

There is more good news about Carbonite as well. All sixteen input Carbonite models now get 2 more inputs for free. As of NAB, any Carbonite systems ordered with 16 inputs will now be shipped with 18 active inputs and existing Carbonite customers will have these extra 2 inputs unlocked with version 12 software. All Carbonite systems now ship with an XPression LiveCG license to provide a complete production system with graphics. There is even an easy upgrade path to XPression Go, Prime, or Studio systems.

Another bonus for all Carbonite customers is that XPression Live CG software is now included with every Carbonite production switcher, providing the ability to design and push static graphics directly to Carbonite’s MediaStores via Ethernet from a customer supplied Windows computer.

Whether your production needs are modest or extreme – there is a Carbonite to match them. Please visit the Ross website at rossvideo.com for full details on the entire Carbonite series.

Ross Robotics Furio RC, the popular remote control dolly system for live stage productions, can now be purchased as a Pan/Tilt head only system, without the dolly.  This package is ideal for remote control Pan Tilt head applications such as concert halls, houses of worship or sports venues where speed and responsiveness are critical.

The SmartShell 4 Robotic Control and Management application has expanded functionality with added support for Grass Valley Ignite and Sony ELC automated production systems, in addition to Ross OverDrive and Viz Mosart. The number of video routing protocols has been greatly expanded, XY floor limits for the CamBot 700XY have been implemented, and robotic control and camera control of Hitachi and Panasonic box cameras is integrated through DashBoard to provide a single, consolidated control station. A number of new usability features have been added including drag-and-drop in the matrix, the use of hard panel buttons for triggering presets or moves, and a new Time knob for adjusting the duration of presets.

Camera Tracking for Virtual Production
SolidTrack, first shown at IBC, is a groundbreaking, visual camera tracking system for use on handheld, Steadicam and other types of camera systems where mechanical tracking solutions aren’t practical or available.  SolidTrack opens up a wide array of new opportunities for adding virtual and augmented reality to broadcast and live event productions. Based on a patented optical tracking technology, SolidTrack delivers accurate real-time tracking data for any camera, without the need for fixed markers or other complex and bulky infrastructure.

Trackless Studio

A small tracking camera with integrated gyro is mounted on the production camera.  The tracking camera sends video, gyro, and lens data back to an image analysis computer via an interface box. The computer runs SolidTrack real-time image analysis software to extract tracking data by building a 3 dimensional ‘point cloud’ of high contrast reference points in the image. Even in environments with limited contrast, such as a green screen, optional infrared targets are available to provide reliable reference points without being visible in the set.

News Editorial
Inception News, the modern newsroom computer system from Ross is  launching version 10 at NAB, the biggest release since its introduction just over two years ago.  This release includes full localization and language packs, new ways to create and share content and some other major new features to be announced at show time.

Inception2

In version 10, the Inception API and SDK are being released.  The API enables developers, partners, customers, and resellers the ability to add new core features and integrate other systems into Inception.  This is a feature that programmers will love, and a great advantage for users that wish to tailor the solution to the unique needs of their operations, and leverage the wealth of content created in Inception to other uses across the enterprise.  This level of customization is only available in Inception due to its modern design and architecture.

This release covers just a few of the highlights of what Ross has in store for NAB this year.  Stay tuned for more announcements as the show approaches.  For those attending NAB in Las Vegas this year, a personal tour on Booth N#3705 can be booked by contacting Ross at solutions@rossvideo.com.

City of San Antonio Implements Ross Legislative Control System

2016 Press Releases, Carbonite, DashBoard, Legislature, XPressionon February 29th, 2016

Monday, February 29th, 2016 [Ottawa, Ontario, Canada] – The City of San Antonio with BeckTV has implemented the Ross Legislative Control System to manage the broadcast of their city council meetings. The system leverages the Ross Carbonite Switcher and XPression real-time graphics controlled by the intuitive touch screen Legislative Control System.

“Previously we had four to six operators in our control room, each with a dedicated task to ensure that our meetings were covered to the citizens of San Antonio. This meant long hours and a crowded control room,” stated Cliff Brannon, AV Production Supervisor, City of San Antonio. “With the Ross Legislative Solution we are able to broadcast professional quality meetings with one or two operators allowing us to have shorter shifts reducing operator fatigue and being able to do other aspects of our jobs instead of having the whole team in the control room.”

San Antonio has two chambers that are controlled by the Ross Legislative Control System. In each chamber there are multiple Sony pan, tilt, zoom (PTZ) cameras. At the touch of the screen, three cameras focus on a representative. Each camera has three programmable shots available allowing the operator to quickly select the best angle to frame the speaker.

Once the shot is lined up, which can be adjusted using the Ross Converged joystick if needed, they simply press the TAKE button. This pulls out the current graphic, cuts the source on the switcher to the new camera, and pulls in the name of the speaker. A touch screen side panel was created using Ross DashBoard to display additional graphical information, such as the item number or selecting a guest speaker’s information from a drop down list.

While one operator is controlling the Ross Solution, the second operator is adjusting audio levels and preparing presentations for the speakers. Operational training for the system was completed in a matter of minutes and the first meeting was broadcast within days of the system being set up.

“We are pleased to add San Antonio the growing number of cities that are leveraging the Ross Legislative Solution,” said Greg Quirk, Legislative Product Manager for Ross Video. “Broadcasting these meetings is vitally important for open governments to ensure that their constituents have the opportunity to know what is happening in their community.”

The Ross Legislative Solution is being used at all levels of government, from city to state to international. The scalable solution is flexible for the end user to make modifications as their assembly changes. Whether that is managing unassigned seating, setting up to broadcast a different meeting in a matter of minutes, or changing the graphical information that is displayed.

Note: Ross Video’s business partner, BeckTV was instrumental in the City of San Antonio Legislative implementation. They continue to maintain a strong relationship that has extended into the legislative market space.

Ross Video Powers Coventry University’s New Flagship TV Studio

2016 Press Releases, Carbonite, Virtual and Augmented Reality, XPressionon February 9th, 2016

Tuesday, February 9, 2016 [Iver Heath, UK] – Coventry University recently cut the ribbon on its new flagship television studio, designed to give students practical, hands-on experience with industry-leading products. Ross Video partners Altered Images and Academia closed out a successful tender win for the studio design, equipment supply and installation.

DCIM100GOPROG0130096.

As part of the deal, Altered Images supplied a Ross Video central core in the gallery, featuring the Carbonite vision mixer, XPression graphics and Clips and a Ross 72×72 router with openGear frames for the peripheral hardware. The gallery features a custom designed Custom Consoles operator desk with a second desk for students and lecturers to oversee the operation. Gallery wall monitoring was achieved utilising Custom Consoles Dual Monitor posts. The Gallery features full talkback and selectable exterior feeds to monitoring screens within the building. A Quicklink server over Skype ensures the gallery can receive external sources as well as uploading to assorted web platforms.

The three-camera “green screen infinity studio” was equipped with cameras from JVC and a prompting system from Cue Script. A fully automated lighting grid was installed to allow green screen lighting as well as required drama, interview and presentation lighting, with the additional options of 360 degree Green, Black and White backdrops.

One of the key issues for the new studio was acoustics, with glass walls running along two sides of the studio. In discussions with architects, the Altered Images Studio Design team agreed to secondary double-glazing and a uniquely designed deployment of acoustic curtains and drapes.

Craig Goddard, Senior Media Technician at Coventry said “This is a state of the art new studio and working closely with Altered Images we achieved a fantastic result and a superb installation that is, just as importantly, on time and on budget”.

Tim Cunningham Senior Regional Development Manager at Altered Images said, “This was an exciting project to be involved with and it was a joy to be able to work closely with the great team at Coventry. I believe this is one of the finest University studios that, with the range of top-end broadcast equipment supplied, will help the students at Coventry to achieve a very detailed understanding of equipment and production techniques, learning on the very equipment that they will encounter in the Broadcast industry”.

Sending his best wishes to students and staff at the opening event by video, David Ross, CEO of Ross Video, highlighted the importance of Universities funding the best possible equipment for their students. “We hear lots of talk about skills gaps in the broadcast industry and it’s vitally important that students leave higher education and enter the workplace armed with the practical knowledge they need to perform. Coventry University has taken a big step forward with this new studio and I’m sure the students and wider industry will benefit as a result”.

Announcing Carbonite Black – The Next Generation Production Powerhouse

2015 Press Releases, Carboniteon September 11th, 2015

Thursday, September 10th, 2015 [Amsterdam, The Netherlands] – Introduced in 2011, Carbonite quickly established itself as the world’s most popular mid-size production switcher with 1000’s in daily use today. Carbonite changed the production industry by setting a new price / performance standard that other manufacturers are still trying to emulate.

Now in 2015 Ross is very proud to introduce the next generation of Carbonite. Carbonite Black is designed of course from the original Carbonite, but with more I/O choices and production power. The 3ME Carbonite Black was unveiled at NAB 2015 to an incredible reception (and orders), and at IBC2015 the entire Carbonite family is being re-launched with new panels and features while retaining its incredibly affordable price point.

“Carbonite Black is a logical progression,” states Nigel Spratling, Marketing Product Manager at Ross Video. “Users simply love their Carbonite’s and the continuous feature updates we provide. Carbonite Black is the next generation of Carbonite designed upon this incredibly solid platform.” Spratling continues, “the new Carbonite Black family includes those processing engines that users are already familiar with, but adds choices for additional I/O and production power. In addition we have completely redesigned the entire control panel range to combine the ease of use and operational familiarity with a sexy and stylish new look that users will be proud of.”

There are 6 new Carbonite Black panels in 1, 2 and 3 ME row layouts with 16, 24 and 32 source buttons. The new Carbonite Black 2RU frame provides an impressive 36 x 22 I/O as standard and can be equipped with 2 or 3 MEs.

Ross Video Introduces Carbonite Black

2015 Press Releases, Carboniteon April 12th, 2015

A New Carbonite Production Powerhouse

Sunday, April 12, 2015 [Las Vegas, Nevada, USA] – Today, Ross Video announces that NAB 2015 will see the introduction of Carbonite Black, the latest addition to Ross Video’s best selling production switcher family.

Carbonite Black brings expanded I/O and ME count to the Carbonite series, with a beautiful new control panel, 3 full MEs, 36 Inputs and 22 outputs – plus all of the superior features found in other Carbonite models such as MiniMEs, MultiScreen, 3G and UHD (4K) format support.

Carbonite Black

“When we introduced Carbonite, it became an instant hit as it completely changed the price and performance model for 1 and 2 ME production switchers. Carbonite Black is designed to do the same thing, but for productions that require larger I/O or 3 MEs,” stated Nigel Spratling, Marketing Product Manager. “Carbonite Black not only looks fantastic, but has more production features and performance than any other product available at this price point. We know that customers will really like this product – and it’s what many of them have been asking us for.”

The 2RU Carbonite Black frame will be available with 2 or 3 MEs, and will accept all current signal formats as standard – including 3G/1080P 50/59.94 and UHD quad link with no reduction of resources whatsoever when processing these higher data rates.

“With 3 MEs and 4 MiniMEs, this switcher effectively has 7 fully available MEs and a total of 23 keyers,” continued Nigel. “Until now, there has been nothing available that can offer this much production power at a mid-size price point, and Carbonite Black is yet another game changer from Ross.”

Carbonite Black will be demonstrated on the Ross Booth #N3906, and is scheduled to begin shipping in July 2015.

openTruck™ – Next Generation Mobile Production
openTruck™ brings innovation to mobile production by providing a standardized yet customizable way to design a new generation of cost-effective remote-production vehicles that deliver the highest quality video and audio content from sports and other live events. A mobile production vehicle, built to the openTruck specifications will be front and center on the Ross stand at IBC.

Acuity – Breakthrough High End Production Switching
Introduced at NAB 2014 and now fully released and shipping, the Acuity production switcher is the latest large production switcher platform. It delivers fast, efficient and error-free production for all formats including UHD (4K) and is ergonomically perfect and stunningly beautiful. The culmination of 40-years’ production switcher design experience, Acuity combines seemingly limitless production power with aesthetic beauty and unprecedented connectivity. No matter what your vision is for the future of your production facility, Acuity will help you lead the way.

Carbonite – The World’s Most Popular Mid-Sized Production Switcher
The award-winning Carbonite production switcher now has more choice and flexibility than ever before with 3G and Advanced UHD (4K) production shipping on new systems and also available to all Carbonite customers through free software upgrades.  These features enable Carbonite to be switched to 3G (1080P 50 or 60 (59.94)) and open the door to the very latest production format: UHDTV (4K) – a capability used by Globosat, Brazil in the recent FIFA World Cup.

Another unexpected free software upgrade to Carbonite is 2.5 ME operation, with two new 3 ME panels available to provide direct access to this additional horsepower—the 3S and 3X— bringing the total number of Carbonite control panel choices to nine.

Inception – The Modern Newsroom Computer System
Inception is “the new kid in town” in newsroom editorial systems and has made a big impression since its introduction last IBC, winning major industry awards for the innovative approach it takes to creating multi-platform content.  Inception enables your operation to truly embrace social media and the web – making them equal partners alongside your linear channel in your content creation efforts.  Designed to handle the modern needs of News, Sports and Entertainment production, Inception is a must see at IBC this year.

Inception Social – Social Media Management Made Easy

Stop by and see a demo of what the state-of-the-art studio of the future looks like.

Furio RC and Furio Robo – Advanced Track Based Robotic Camera Systems
Ross Video’s rail-based remote-control camera system, Furio RC, has a new control option that makes controlling the Furio similar to controlling a manual camera. The Furio Panbar controller has a fluid head for pan, tilt, zoom and focus, and foot pedals for dolly and lift, making it easier to get those dramatic production shots the Furio RC is famous for. A new collision avoidance option enables two Furio Robo Systems to safely share a single track, maximizing flexibility and the ability to attain the best camera shots.

OverDrive Caprica – Automated Production
OverDrive, the worlds most popular system for automating news production is now shipping with a new version called OverDrive Caprica which adds support for 3rd party (non-Ross) production switchers.  This allows customers with installed legacy production switchers to make the move to automation without having to replace their production switcher.

MC1 – The Affordable Master Control Solution
The MC1 simple, robust and affordable Master Control System has added an optional physical control panel that is fully customizable and supports scalable multi-channel operations. The MC1 System is now also available as a standalone openGear module for channel branding and emergency alert system insertion.

Nielsen Watermarks – Audience Measurement Systems
Ross is Nielsen’s partner in providing and supporting the equipment needed by broadcasters to insert Nielsen Watermarks for audience measurement. Ross now offers the NWE-TS which can watermark signals in the compressed domain. The NWE-TS accepts ATSC ASI transport streams and will watermark up to 10 channels simultaneously.
