Wednesday, April 25, 2013 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] – Ross Video’s Carbonite eXtreme was the recipient of Broadcast Engineering’s 2013 Broadcast Engineering Pick Hit Award at NAB in Las Vegas.
Carbonite eXtreme is a combination of production switching with signal routing and distribution in the same chassis. The secret to Carbonite eXtreme is that the production switcher is embedded in the heart of the routing matrix.
“Routing, production switching, multi-viewers, up/down conversion, frame syncing and interconnecting distribution were traditionally all separate pieces,” said David Ross, CEO, Ross Video. “With Carbonite eXtreme, we have combined all these into a powerful combined package.”
Up to two Carbonite Production Matrices can be added to the Carbonite eXtreme Chassis providing two independent production systems in one. At the same time, Carbonite eXtreme fulfills the roll of a facility router with a full 144 x 144 switching matrix that can feed your entire production plant or mobile truck.
The prestigious Pick Hit Awards are selected by a panel of independent judges who tour the convention floor looking for innovative products and technology. The winners are based on criteria such as technical and financial improvements the product can bring to a facility’s operation. Broadcast Engineering editors and publishers have no vote in the selection process, ensuring the winners truly represent outstanding achievements in the eyes of a group of people who are representative of those making TV happen.

Sunday, April 7, 2013 [Las Vegas, NV, USA] – The Carbonite eXtreme breaks away from traditional production switcher architecture, combining production switching with signal routing and distribution in the same chassis – simplifying installation and operation at an affordable cost.
Production switchers have always been designed to deliver a single Program output from multiple input sources, while many production systems today are required to deliver outputs to multiple screens, on-set displays and signal distribution systems. This is particularly true for live production of worship and stage events, as well as larger facilities and multi-site complexes.
“We decided to take a fresh look at production switcher applications and formed customer focus groups to help us better understand the overall requirements of modern production systems,” said Nigel Spratling, Production Switcher Business Development Manager, Ross Video. “Carbonite eXtreme is the totally unique result of our research, and it’s the perfect solution. The massive reduction in rack-space and interconnections makes it ideal for production vehicles.”
The eXtreme chassis can be configured with an I/O of up to 144 x 144 in increments of 8, and internally houses the Carbonite production switcher. With eXtreme it’s now simple to manage complex productions across multiple output destinations.
“eXtreme is a truly revolutionary production tool, with the horsepower of Carbonite wrapped inside a highly configurable signal routing and management system,” continued Spratling. “It works with any Carbonite control panel and NK router panel, and when combined with our XPression graphics systems, BlackStorm playout servers and our DashBoard control systems, you have a complete ‘state of the art’ production system with full signal management. Nothing like this has ever been seen before, it’s a real game changer!”
Carbonite eXtreme is scheduled to ship in June 2013, and will be debuted at Ross Video’s Booth N3808 at NAB in Las Vegas.

A 16 input Carbonite 10 has a US list price of $18,995, and is available for immediate delivery.

Wednesday, October 16, 2012 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] — Ross Video today announced that its Carbonite C2X, a new production switcher panel, is the recipient of a 2012 STAR (Superior Technology Award Recipient) Award, given by the editorial staff of TV Technology Europe magazine at the 2012 IBC convention.
Built for fast paced, high-pressure productions, the Carbonite C2X is a 2 MLE panel that includes 32 direct access source select buttons and individual memory management keypads for each MLE. It’s the fourth panel to be added to the growing Carbonite family, and is compatible with all Carbonite production engines.
“While Carbonite has been an astonishing success, many customers looking to replace SD 2 ME switchers had requested individual MLE Effects Memory control as well as more direct input select buttons to avoid ‘shifts’,” stated Nigel Spratling, Marketing Product Manager, Production Switchers – Communications, Ross Video. “We have listened to these customer requests and the C2X is the result. It’s an awesome panel that has direct single button access to all functions. TD’s working in fast paced Sport and News productions will love it. When you combine the C2X with our new ViewControl touch screen the whole production system falls neatly under your fingertips, it’s a truly powerful and elegant way to efficiently switch a show.”
Published by NewBay Media, TV Technology Europe is the region’s leading magazine for broadcast technology. The magazine’s STAR Award (Superior Technology Award Recipient) is designed to celebrate and showcase the preeminent technological innovations available to the broadcast industry. TV Technology Europe’s editor reviewed a variety of products, examined the technical applications and their overall contribution to the industry, and then chose 27 winners.
“STAR awards are given to interesting new products that help a user save money or accomplish a task in an easier way,” said Mark Hallinger, Editor of TV Technology Europe. “The products selected help advance the industry. Some were chosen because of technical novelty or innovation, some because they filled an important gap in the production or transmission chain, and some because they were just cool products.”
