Ross Video Extends the Range of Vision Mixer Solutions at IBC 2016

2016 Press Releases, Acuity, Carbonite, Carbonite Black Soloon September 8th, 2016

Thursday, September 8th, 2016 [Amsterdam, the Netherlands] – The Carbonite Black Solo was introduced at NAB 2016 and is now shipping in quantity! Solo is packed full of the features that Carbonite users love and use everyday. It is a compact vision mixer with 9 inputs and 6 outputs, specifically designed to meet the needs of smaller productions. On the input side Solo has 6 SD/HD-SDI connections and 3 HDMI inputs, and there are 6 floating frame synchronizers with format converters that can be assigned to any input, so connecting those unreferenced sources is simple. For outputs there are 5 SDI and one HDMI, all completely assignable.

Carbonite Black Solo features a powerful single ME with 4 full featured keyers, a transition keyer for DVE and Media wipes and an Ultrachrome chroma keyer. In addition, there are 2 MiniME’s that are perfect for use in small event production and for secondary produced outputs. Each MiniME has two keyers of its own, providing Solo with 8 key layers in total – extremely powerful for a small vision mixer.

Carbonite Black Solo

The Solo includes a fully configurable multi viewer as well as four channels of media store for animated graphics or stills. There is also a digital audio output for the playback of audio with animations.

Carbonite Black Solo has all of the desirable production features found in the larger Carbonite vision mixers, including full DashBoard control integration, ViewControl touch screen visual control, and RossTalk protocol, as well as Camera Robotics, Video Server, and Audio Mixer control interfaces.

At IBC there are three versions of Carbonite Black Solo on show, the beautifully styled All-In-One system in which the electronics are contained within an elegant control panel. The second version has the electronics housed in a 1 RU frame, which can be fully controlled from the included software control panel, and the new stand alone panel- the CB9. The new CB9 panel is identical to the all-in-one version but offers a separate control surface for use with the 1RU rack frame or indeed any other Carbonite as an inexpensive satellite control panel.

Carbonite Black Solo is the perfect fit for smaller productions where quality and operational performance is still essential, but in a package that is remarkably affordable.

All Carbonite models now ship as standard with XPression LiveCG, a software only version of the award winning XPression graphics system. XPression LiveCG can be loaded on any windows machine with an NVidia graphics card and connected directly into Carbonite media stores via Ethernet.

Carbonite Version 12.1 is being shown for the first time bringing several desirable additional features. With 12.1, Carbonite processes 1080P25 signals natively in addition to the host of other signal formats already available. MiniME’s get PST monitor function, and now MiniME and 4K next backgrounds can be previewed in Carbonite MultiViewers. A small but very nice new feature is the ability to select alternate thumbnails for media store animations for viewing in preview mode.

The Carbonite Black Plus shown first at NAB is a signal processing marvel, in this version all 36 inputs have Frame Synchronizers, Format converters, Color Correction and Proc amps included. In addition 12 of the 25 outputs have Proc amps, Color Correction and Format Conversion available as standard. This makes it perfect for matching those on set displays and output multiple formats.

Carbonite Black Plus

The Black Plus also adds more monitoring capability. With this processing engine there are a total of 5 MultiViewers with up to 16 configurable windows each. So there are 80 windows in total, ensuring every aspect of a production can be monitored. They system offers monitoring of all 36 inputs, 22 outputs, the media stores, three MEs, four MiniMEs, and aux buses – that is simply huge! The processing engine includes three new outputs dedicated to MultiViewers, so there is no need to give up main outputs for monitoring.

Of course these new Carbonite Black Plus features are in addition to the 3 full ME’s and 4 MiniME’s, simple 4K production, 1080P 3G, and much – much more.

Whether your production needs are modest or extreme – there is a Carbonite to match them.

There is also a preview of several major additions to the Acuity vision mixer. Being shown is version 5.0, which brings a number of highly desirable new operational features including Split ME, DVE Warps, Lighting Engine, and supports the new MultiProcessing Inputs card option. Also being shown is the new DoubleDown version of the beautifully styled Acuity Panel.

Acuity

Acuity is already a truly advanced production powerhouse, the addition of these new features make it the number one choice for production of high end events, news and sport – in SD, HD or UHD formats.

Version 5.0 further expands the capabilities of the acclaimed MultiFeed functionality with added Split ME controls. Now it is possible to set up an Acuity ME as two MEs with up to eight keyer assignments. The extensive configurability enabled by these features permits Acuity to fit into an even greater number of production environments and workflows. A fully loaded 8 ME machine can now be configured as a massive 16 ME system – or of course a full 4 ME UHD (4K) switcher. Add to that new warp effects and lighting engines to build even more sophisticated look and whatever the production goals are – Acuity will provide the tools to meet them.

Version 5.0 adds a new signal processing format, so that Acuity now accepts 1080P25 inputs and manages them natively.

In a collaborative effort with Evertz, Acuity can be equipped with IP (10G) I/O signal management. The Acuity IPBlades work with ASPEN and SMPTE 2022-6 Protocols and also provide standard SDI connections. These IP I/O cards can coexist with standard Acuity I/O cards permitting hybrid IP/SDI system configurations.

Acuity DoubleDown Panels are a powerful new option for those large I/O systems in sport and other fast paced productions where shift functions to access mapped sources are undesirable. DoubleDown bus models are a premium option that doubles the number of key/aux bus assignment buttons for every ME row; thereby greatly reducing or eliminating the need for shifts entirely.

Acuity is rapidly evolving and Ross is continuing its significant investments in vision mixer R&D to ensure that it is not only the best available choice today, but will remain so for many years to come.

ESL Builds Esports Online with Ross Video

2016 Press Releases, Carbonite, DashBoard, NK, XPressionon July 20th, 2016

In less than a generation, the video games industry has risen to become even more popular and profitable than the movie business. Online gaming, in particular, has exploded and given rise to Esports: a video over IP platform that sees teams of gamers compete against each other in leagues and tournaments that are broadcast online to audiences of thousands. At the forefront of Esports is ESL, a gaming network with 15 studios around the world that brings gamers, analysts, pundits and fans together to enjoy the excitement of tournaments, competition and big prize money.

ESL Set

ESL’s UK studio operations are hidden away on a quiet and inconspicuous industrial park in Leicester. With room for several teams of gamers, commentators and an audience of up to 100 fans, the largest studio broadcasts 3-4 times a week and includes a range of products from Ross Video. “We made the jump to Ross in order to simplify and improve our workflow”, comments Sam Deans, ESL UK’s Production Director. “I’ve worked in broadcast for a number of years and I understand the value and importance of high production values. We wanted to take a step up from our previous equipment and create slicker and more professional-looking broadcasts, but also wanted to ensure that these broadcasts could be easily and consistently run by the people on the team who aren’t broadcast engineers. This is where DashBoard has been a lifesaver for us. We worked with Ross to create customised DashBoard panels that enable anyone on the team to manage one of our broadcasts. We are not a huge team so we all need to be flexible and multitask; Ross has really helped us to simplify our operations and deliver fantastic looking results on screen.

ESL DashBoards

ESL’s studio in the UK is similar to their facility in Cologne, Germany. Both use the Carbonite Black production switcher and all on-screen graphics are provided by the Ross XPression platform. NK routers and DashBoard, Ross Video’s open source control interface, help complete the system. “We’ve been delighted at how scalable the system is”, remarks Sam Deans, “and we’re already thinking about how we might introduce augmented reality into our broadcasts. The level of technical support from Ross has been first-class and has given us great confidence to expand and build on our system. It’s great to know we can grow and be even more creative and still get everything we need from the one company”.

“Esports is a rapidly growing business; as an industry we expect it to be worth around $1000m within 2 years”, comments James Dean, ESL UK’s Managing Director.  “We’re not a traditional broadcaster, however the expectations of production values are ever increasing in-line with the size of the industry currently serving over 150 million viewers.  The versatility that Ross Video solutions offer have been crucial in helping us deliver extremely high quality content in our unique production environment”.

Mediaburst Chooses Ross Video to Support Wimbledon Coverage

2016 Press Releases, Carbonite, Sport & Live Eventon July 8th, 2016

Friday, July 8th, 2016, [Pinewood Studios, UK] – Grass court tennis in the SW19 district of London is an integral part of the British summer and the Wimbledon Championship brings together the world’s best players to compete on arguably the calendar’s most challenging surface.

Challenging, too, are the logistics of capturing the action from 19 courts and supplying the global network of broadcasters who want to report on the tournament. This year, Portuguese company Mediaburst (part of Spain’s Mediapro Group) has been providing unilateral feeds to beIN Sports in France and the Middle East using Ross Video’s Carbonite Black – the world’s best-selling midsize production switcher. Commenting on the Wimbledon set-up, Fernando Costa, Mediaburst’s Production Manager, highlighted the importance of flexibility in a live production environment like Wimbledon. “I travel all over the world covering all different kinds of sports for channels like beIN Sports and for the host broadcasters. Regardless of the sport or venue, time and space are usually always tight and we need proven, road-tested solutions that we know will deliver. The Carbonite switcher has been extremely easy to use and live with and that’s exactly what we want in an environment like this – no fuss, no drama and plenty of production power!”

Carbonite

For the tennis coverage, Mediaburst chose a 2ME Carbonite Black (3X panel) to ensure they had enough headroom to manage the complexities of the tournament. “We’re really pleased with the way the Carbonite has performed; our team members with experience of switchers from other manufacturers have been very impressed at the performance of the Carbonite given it’s compact size, and we can see why so many content creators favour it in an outside broadcast environment”.

City of San Antonio Implements Ross Legislative Control System

2016 Press Releases, Carbonite, DashBoard, Legislature, XPressionon February 29th, 2016

Monday, February 29th, 2016 [Ottawa, Ontario, Canada] – The City of San Antonio with BeckTV has implemented the Ross Legislative Control System to manage the broadcast of their city council meetings. The system leverages the Ross Carbonite Switcher and XPression real-time graphics controlled by the intuitive touch screen Legislative Control System.

“Previously we had four to six operators in our control room, each with a dedicated task to ensure that our meetings were covered to the citizens of San Antonio. This meant long hours and a crowded control room,” stated Cliff Brannon, AV Production Supervisor, City of San Antonio. “With the Ross Legislative Solution we are able to broadcast professional quality meetings with one or two operators allowing us to have shorter shifts reducing operator fatigue and being able to do other aspects of our jobs instead of having the whole team in the control room.”

San Antonio has two chambers that are controlled by the Ross Legislative Control System. In each chamber there are multiple Sony pan, tilt, zoom (PTZ) cameras. At the touch of the screen, three cameras focus on a representative. Each camera has three programmable shots available allowing the operator to quickly select the best angle to frame the speaker.

Once the shot is lined up, which can be adjusted using the Ross Converged joystick if needed, they simply press the TAKE button. This pulls out the current graphic, cuts the source on the switcher to the new camera, and pulls in the name of the speaker. A touch screen side panel was created using Ross DashBoard to display additional graphical information, such as the item number or selecting a guest speaker’s information from a drop down list.

While one operator is controlling the Ross Solution, the second operator is adjusting audio levels and preparing presentations for the speakers. Operational training for the system was completed in a matter of minutes and the first meeting was broadcast within days of the system being set up.

“We are pleased to add San Antonio the growing number of cities that are leveraging the Ross Legislative Solution,” said Greg Quirk, Legislative Product Manager for Ross Video. “Broadcasting these meetings is vitally important for open governments to ensure that their constituents have the opportunity to know what is happening in their community.”

The Ross Legislative Solution is being used at all levels of government, from city to state to international. The scalable solution is flexible for the end user to make modifications as their assembly changes. Whether that is managing unassigned seating, setting up to broadcast a different meeting in a matter of minutes, or changing the graphical information that is displayed.

Note: Ross Video’s business partner, BeckTV was instrumental in the City of San Antonio Legislative implementation. They continue to maintain a strong relationship that has extended into the legislative market space.

Ross Video Powers Coventry University’s New Flagship TV Studio

2016 Press Releases, Carbonite, Virtual and Augmented Reality, XPressionon February 9th, 2016

Tuesday, February 9, 2016 [Iver Heath, UK] – Coventry University recently cut the ribbon on its new flagship television studio, designed to give students practical, hands-on experience with industry-leading products. Ross Video partners Altered Images and Academia closed out a successful tender win for the studio design, equipment supply and installation.

DCIM100GOPROG0130096.

As part of the deal, Altered Images supplied a Ross Video central core in the gallery, featuring the Carbonite vision mixer, XPression graphics and Clips and a Ross 72×72 router with openGear frames for the peripheral hardware. The gallery features a custom designed Custom Consoles operator desk with a second desk for students and lecturers to oversee the operation. Gallery wall monitoring was achieved utilising Custom Consoles Dual Monitor posts. The Gallery features full talkback and selectable exterior feeds to monitoring screens within the building. A Quicklink server over Skype ensures the gallery can receive external sources as well as uploading to assorted web platforms.

The three-camera “green screen infinity studio” was equipped with cameras from JVC and a prompting system from Cue Script. A fully automated lighting grid was installed to allow green screen lighting as well as required drama, interview and presentation lighting, with the additional options of 360 degree Green, Black and White backdrops.

One of the key issues for the new studio was acoustics, with glass walls running along two sides of the studio. In discussions with architects, the Altered Images Studio Design team agreed to secondary double-glazing and a uniquely designed deployment of acoustic curtains and drapes.

Craig Goddard, Senior Media Technician at Coventry said “This is a state of the art new studio and working closely with Altered Images we achieved a fantastic result and a superb installation that is, just as importantly, on time and on budget”.

Tim Cunningham Senior Regional Development Manager at Altered Images said, “This was an exciting project to be involved with and it was a joy to be able to work closely with the great team at Coventry. I believe this is one of the finest University studios that, with the range of top-end broadcast equipment supplied, will help the students at Coventry to achieve a very detailed understanding of equipment and production techniques, learning on the very equipment that they will encounter in the Broadcast industry”.

Sending his best wishes to students and staff at the opening event by video, David Ross, CEO of Ross Video, highlighted the importance of Universities funding the best possible equipment for their students. “We hear lots of talk about skills gaps in the broadcast industry and it’s vitally important that students leave higher education and enter the workplace armed with the practical knowledge they need to perform. Coventry University has taken a big step forward with this new studio and I’m sure the students and wider industry will benefit as a result”.

Announcing Carbonite Black – The Next Generation Production Powerhouse

2015 Press Releases, Carboniteon September 11th, 2015

Thursday, September 10th, 2015 [Amsterdam, The Netherlands] – Introduced in 2011, Carbonite quickly established itself as the world’s most popular mid-size production switcher with 1000’s in daily use today. Carbonite changed the production industry by setting a new price / performance standard that other manufacturers are still trying to emulate.

Now in 2015 Ross is very proud to introduce the next generation of Carbonite. Carbonite Black is designed of course from the original Carbonite, but with more I/O choices and production power. The 3ME Carbonite Black was unveiled at NAB 2015 to an incredible reception (and orders), and at IBC2015 the entire Carbonite family is being re-launched with new panels and features while retaining its incredibly affordable price point.

“Carbonite Black is a logical progression,” states Nigel Spratling, Marketing Product Manager at Ross Video. “Users simply love their Carbonite’s and the continuous feature updates we provide.
