Mongolia National Broadcaster Upgrades Facility
and Programming with Ross

2014 Press Releases, Carbonite, Inception, NK, openGear, XPressionon April 21st, 2014

Monday, April 21st, 2014 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] - Mongolia National Broadcaster (MNB), a state-funded television channel in Mongolia upgraded from analog to digital broadcasting using Ross Video Production Technology.

MNBMNB wanted to provide their viewers with a better experience, while changing the look and feel of their programming. MNB accepted Global Telecom’s tender and began their introduction to Ross Video’s Carbonite Production Switcher, XPression Character Generator and Graphics System, Inception News Newsroom Control System, MC1 Master Control System, openGear Terminal Equipment and NK Series Router.

“Our first experience with Ross Video began 15 years ago with a purchase of an RVS 216A Analog Production Switcher – which still works perfectly to this day,” said Mr. Temuujin. S, Head of Engineering, MNB. “In order for MNB to successfully go digital, we needed to invest in a lot of new equipment. After requesting tenders from local vendors, Global Telecom won with the recommendation of Ross technology – and a decision that has proven to be an easy transition.”

While still awaiting installation of a few products – XPression, NK Series and Inception News – MC1 has proven to be the straightforward master control switcher MNB required. Carbonite is also fulfilling all of their production requirements.

“Carbonite allows us to produce our programs more effectively, as well as plan for more programming moving forward,” continued Mr. Temuujin. “While the initial investment was high, the built-in features such as the Chroma Keyer and MultiViewer saved us money – and space. Our operators are truly enjoying everything Carbonite has to offer and can’t wait for the rest of our Ross equipment to be up and running.

Ross Video’s New @ NAB 2014

2014 Press Releases, Carbonite, Corporate, DashBoard, Inception, Nielsen, NK, openGear, OverDrive, Robotics, Vision, XPressionon February 20th, 2014

Thursday, February 20, 2014 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] Ross Video is celebrating their 40th anniversary at NAB this year with a new corporate logo, a new tag line “Production Technology Experts” and a significantly expanded NAB presence.  The growing range of Ross production technology solutions can be seen at the Ross Booth #N3806 in the North Hall.

As always at Ross, the emphasis is on power and affordability – creating leading edge products at great prices, backed by exceptional support and customer service.  Here’s a preview of some of the things to expect from Ross at NAB this year.  In addition to what follows, Ross is anticipating a few last minute surprises out of their development labs that will be announced closer to show time.

Production Switchers
Vision Tritium, the sweet spot in large production switcher value and performance, makes its North American debut.   Vision Tritium is a full 3MLE modular production switcher packed full of features including: 48 x 32 Multi-Definition inputs and outputs, 6 real 3D DVE’s, 16 channels of internal media stores, 16 keyers, UltraChrome chroma keys, built in Dual Head MultiViewers and a massive list of supported external device controls.

The Tritium processing engine pairs with a stunning Vision series modular 3MLE panel – with a choice of 24 or 32 direct access crosspoint buttons, and featuring Ross’ PanelGlow RGB buttons and DualDisplay touch screen menu system. Tritium is fully upgradable and accepts standard Vision Octane components.

Carbonite – Ross’ breakthrough mid-size production switcher series will show off its latest features, including the award winning MiniME and MultiScreen processing technologies.  Available as a free software upgrade to all Carbonite customers (downloadable from the Ross website), these new features demonstrate the exceptional long-term value in buying Ross.

MiniME’s can be used anywhere in the signal flow – either as pre-keyers or as independent transition engines.  MiniME’s produce a layered composition such as a virtual set background with a chroma key and an OTS DVE.  They can be selected as direct inputs, or as independent keying and transition engines on up to 4 Auxiliary outputs for on-set displays.

MiniME’s live in a resource ‘pool’ and are only assigned when required. Once the transition or effect is completed they are instantly available for use elsewhere. MiniME’s are not like ‘Split ME’s’ or ‘multi program mode ME’s’ where ME resources are divided up and reassigned into smaller sections. MiniME’s are entirely independent devices leaving all standard ME resources available.

MultiScreenTM production is now available directly within a standard Carbonite thanks to Ross’ new MiniME’s. Up to four outputs can be controlled independently off Carbonite’s main ME’s, allowing a single source to be scaled over up to 4 outputs in multiple screen layouts. Keys and DVE’s can also be included to facilitate compelling multiscreen productions. Expensive additional screen processors are no longer required when you’ve got a Carbonite switcher, as bezel compensation and edge blending for multi-projector setups are part of the package – a major system cost saving.

The Carbonite C2S is Ross’ new 24 button, 2ME panel incorporating individual ME Effects Memory keypads.  The C2S is ideal for sport and other productions in which the TD prefers to switch the show directly from the memory keypad. The C2S has all the features of the popular C2M panel, adding a dedicated ME Effects Memory control area in each ME – in addition to the standard global controls. The C2M panel brings the number of Carbonite panel choices to 7, covering a broad range of client needs, space and budgets.

DashBoard Facility Control
DashBoard is Ross’ free facility control software that controls everything from Ross and our openGear and DashBoard Connect partners as well as a variety of other UDP, TCP and HTTP devices.  Version 6.1 will launch at NAB and provides PanelBuilder – the ability for anyone to build purpose built CustomPanels and Automated Workflows.  PanelBuilder makes customized control quick and easy via an intuitive drag and drop mode for building CustomPanels.

OverDrive Automated Production Control
At NAB, OverDrive takes the biggest leap forward since its initial release with the North American debut of OverDrive Caprica – adding the ability to control third party production switchers.   Non-Ross production switcher customers can now enjoy the efficiency and consistency benefits of automating with OverDrive. OverDrive will be paired with Inception News at NAB 2014, showing a complete end-to-end news production workflow.

Inception News & Social
Inception News is Ross’ unique newsroom computer system that blends the needs of traditional linear channel production with the modern requirements of web and social media content publication.    Launched at IBC, this is the first showing of Inception News in North America.  Providing both outbound publication as well as inbound searching and harvesting of social media, Inception is a great tool for your television producers and journalists as well as your social media team.

XPression 3D HD CG & Motion Graphics System
XPression motion graphics now offers solutions for virtually every type of onscreen live graphics requirement – everything from live character generation, to branding, to virtual sets and augmented reality.  In addition to a host of new production features here are some of the new things from XPression this year:

XPression Tick-it and Brand-it are fully-automated, turnkey solutions for local TV and enterprise channel branding.

XPression Prime GO!  a portable solution running on a laptop with full HDSDI I/O.

XPression Template Builder – an application for the creation of graphics outside of NRCS and NLE environments for later incorporation into programs.

XPression Touchscreen and Telestration applications that provide freehand control and drawing capabilities over XPression Scenes. Visual Scripting allows non-programmers to create complex scene interactivity.

XPression Virtual Set & Augmented Reality enhancements including support for Trackmen protocol, CCD chip size selection, 2nd and 4th order spherical lens correction, and global cameras.

Ross and Unreel Virtual Set & Augmented Reality
Ross and our virtual tracking partner Unreel will again be showing a fully turnkey virtual set and augmented reality solution, making it easy for anyone to quickly deploy a virtual set or to add augmented graphics to an existing set.  This year, you’ll have an opportunity to get right on the set and experience what it’s like to be talent in a virtual environment for yourself.

Ross Robotics
Furio RC is Ross’ rail based remote control camera system used on top end stage productions and variety shows.  Furio RC adds a new control option for NAB – Furio Panbar.  The Panbar controller makes controlling Furio RC similar to running a manual camera.  The operator controls a fluid head for pan/tilt/zoom/focus and foot pedals for dolly and lift.  Many operators find this control method more precise, faster and more intuitive – making it easier to get those dramatic production shots that Furio RC is famous for.

The Furio Robo rail based studio system adds a Collision Avoidance option that allows two Furio Robo dolly systems to more easily share a single track during a production while maximizing flexibility in attaining the best camera shots.

Infrastructure – Routing, Terminal Equipment & Nielsen Watermarks
New in the NK Series Routing systems is the NK-144 which can now be upgraded to include the full functionality of up to 2 Carbonite production switchers internally –  becoming a full Carbonite eXtreme.  This revolutionary product combines facility routing with production switching and multi-viewing all in a single rackframe, dramatically simplifying system cabling and distribution.

Another addition to NK is customer definable DashBoard-based soft panels, making router control available from any computer.  These CustomPanels can combine control of a variety of other Ross and 3rd party equipment at the same time – streamlining user operation.

The MC1 simple, robust and affordable Master Control System has added extended EAS interface, multi-channel scalable operations and enhanced graphics capabilities. The MC1 System is now also available as a standalone openGear module for channel branding and EAS insertion.

At last year’s NAB, Ross launched openGear 3.0, the third generation of our openGear frame standard, increasing power and cooling and adding advanced networked control.  The openGear ecosystem now includes 60+ partners and deployed by thousands of clients.   The latest version of DashBoard (free!), mentioned above provides extensive new control features to all openGear products.

Ross has expanded its portfolio in Nielsen Watermarks offerings with the addition of a new transport stream Nielsen Watermarks encoder.  The NWE-TS accepts ATSC ASI transport streams and will watermark up to 10 channels simultaneously.

Ross Mobile Productions
Ross’ production arm, Ross Mobile Productions will launch their new Mobile Production OT1 compact production vehicle. Ross is building a fleet of these vehicles to offer full production packaging and rental services.  OT1 is a platform that Ross will be soon making available detailed designs for so that other truck companies can get on board with this new open standard for truck designs and workflows.

OT1 is designed around a tightly integrated Carbonite Production Switcher and XPression Graphics core. The 10 operator position OT1 platform offers both Fiber and Triax camera capabilities, an advanced communication system, and a dual user 8 channel replay system – incredible power –  all in a Mercedes Sprinter size vehicle.

The OT1 vehicle platform is the first public showing of a truck based on the openTruck™ initiative from Ross and offers a standardized path to designing cost-effective remote production vehicles that enable delivery of high-quality digital content from sports venues and other live events. Taking advantage of interoperable broadcast systems from Ross Video and other leading technology vendors, openTruck offers production vehicle partners access to open protocols, specifications, and schematics for efficient workflows, uncompromising video quality, and rapid event-to-event reconfiguration.

Michigan State Athletic Communications Department Deploys Full Suite of Ross Video Production Equipment for Control Room Upgrade

2013 Press Releases, BlackStrom, Carbonite, NK, openGear, XPressionon November 13th, 2013

Wednesday, November 13, 2013 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] – Ross Video today announced that Michigan State Athletic Communications has selected a full suite of Ross Video products for use within their extensive control room upgrade. The department is deploying the company’s Carbonite range of video production switchers in tandem with the CrossOver video production switcher; openGear® terminal equipment; NK Series routing system; BlackStorm playout server and Ross XPression Realtime Motion Graphics System.

Michigan StateThe control-room upgrade complements new video boards recently installed in the university’s Spartan Stadium for which the Athletic Communications department offers broadcast-quality video and graphcs. Ross Video switching and routing technology allows for the video to be delivered simultaneously to multiple events at the stadium, as well as to Breslin Arena and Munn Ice Arena.

The Ross Carbonite switcher, with its ergonomic design and super-compact frame, offers powerful performance that is critical for broadcast-quality production. The CrossOver video switcher functions as an auxiliary switcher when the department needs to broadcast simultaneous sporting events, often across the three different venues. The video content produced by the department is also repurposed for weekly broadcasts of football and basketball coverage.

The BlackStorm playout server, installed in the control room, offers a powerful video server engine, driving a comprehensive production workflow from a compact chassis. Designed from the ground up by using next-generation parallel processing technology, the BlackStorm server provides the department with the power of a much larger system. Additionally, the XPression system provides high-end graphics and animations, and rounds out the department’s workflow. The control room also uses Ross openGear® video and audio rack mount terminal equipment that ties the control room together.

“The Ross switchers and the XPression graphics system sync so well with the BlackStorm Playout Server, that we’ve been able to add far more views of game action and fan reaction, than we had with our previous generation of equipment,” said Bob Armstrong, video producer at Michigan State Athletic Communications. “The openGear platform provided us with a much cleaner and more compact control room by eliminating the need to accommodate multiple card frame brands. Since almost all leading brands work seamlessly in the Ross workflow, we were free to choose from other complementary products available on the market to ensure a high-quality, efficient, and smooth workflow.”

The intuitive operation of the Ross gear is particularly helpful to the Athletic Communications department staff, whose game-day workforce is comprised primarily of MSU students. The equipment’s ease of use allows the department to quickly and easily train students, who are in the process of learning how to operate broadcast technology in a live environment.

The Ross LCS provides a touch screen user interface laid out for the unique needs of producing video from a legislative assembly.  It can be tailored to the specific configuration of any legislature.  Despite the rich array of complex technologies, production control is unified into a simple touch screen interface that allows a clean, attractive, network quality production to be created by a single operator. By integrating with the microphone or delegate system the best camera angle and relevant graphical overlay are automatically selected and placed on the Preset.  The operator can then trim the camera, if desired, and Take the new angle and graphics.

“As soon as I saw the user interface I immediately appreciated its power and simplicity.  It was one of the decisive factors in choosing a total Ross solution,” said Derek Hayes, General Manager, Capitol Television. “Ross technology is known to be top notch and of course, Ross has a great reputation for service and support.”

“DashBoard 6.0, with the rapid customization capabilities of its PanelBuilder feature, together with the fact that all Ross equipment used here “speaks DashBoard” is what enabled us to create this compelling, robust solution.  Expect to see more like this from Ross,” said John Naylor, DashBoard Marketing Product Manger, Ross Video.

Vision Series Production Switchers
New 1080p (3G) processing technology has been added to our flagship Vision Octane series of Production Switchers. Built on the standard Octane production engine but with new state-of-the-art FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) devices that allow 1080p production without compromise.

Vision Octane 3G not only accommodates 1080p /50 or 60 production but also adds dual 2D DVE resizers with combiner to every MLE key as well as two more DVE channels for transitions. This makes it possible to create 8 box shots on every MLE in the system and transition them dynamically. In addition, Vision Octane 3G has significantly expanded MLE MediaStores, each MLE now has 8Gb of storage for still and animated graphic playout.

Vision Octane 3G is shipping as of IBC 2013.

Carbonite Series Production Switchers
Introducing the Carbonite C2S, a new 24 button 2 ME panel for Carbonite incorporating individual ME Effects Memory keypads. The C2S has all of the features of the very popular C2M panel and adds ME effects memory controls in addition to the standard global controls. This new panel brings the number of Carbonite panel choices to 7, continuing the expansion of this rapidly evolving product line.

Carbonite eXtreme
Carbonite eXtreme is a truly revolutionary production tool with all of the horsepower of Carbonite wrapped inside a highly configurable signal routing and management system. It can be configured with any Carbonite control panel and NK router panels and when combined with our XPression graphics systems, BlackStorm playout servers and our DashBoard control systems, you have a complete ‘state of the art’ production system with full signal management. Nothing like this has ever been seen before, it is a real game changer.

Carbonite eXtreme merges production switching with signal routing and distribution in the same chassis, this combination simplifies installation and operation immensely while also offering huge cost savings. The eXtreme chassis can be configured with an I/O of up to 144 x 144 in increments of 8 and internally houses the award winning Carbonite production switcher. With eXtreme, it is now simple to manage complex productions across multiple output destinations.

NK Series Routing Systems
The affordable NK Series video, audio and machine control routing solutions will be shown at IBC.  The 64×64 chassis and 72×72 chassis are now 3G, making the entire video matrix line up from 16×4 to 144×144 all 3G.

Master Control System
The MC1 – simple, robust and affordable Master Control System has taken the industry by storm in its first year. Integrated DVE for squeeze back, increased multi-channel operation with enhanced graphics capability and extended EAS interfaces are just a few of the new extras for the MC1 this year.

openGear
openGear, the open frame standard backed by multiple vendors and deployed by many customers, continues to lead the market with Ross showcasing the third generation OG3 frame with three times the power capacity coupled with dedicated GigE buses to every slot plus many more features. openGear is a must see at IBC.

New openGear products range from a new family of distribution amplifiers fully compliant to 3G offering single, dual and quad configurations with the option of high density HD BNC or standard BNC I/O to a new family of Fiber conversions for Ethernet over Fiber in single, dual, and triple configurations.

GearLite
The GearLite line has grown substantially with the addition of SDI to Fiber conversions with both LC and ST connectivity, 3G distribution and audio MUX/DMX.

OverDrive Automated Production Control System
OverDrive, the world’s leading APC system, now works with third party vision mixers.  Ross has long been the industry leader in third party device control and has now added vision mixers to the evergrowing list of controllable devices.  In addition, v14.0 offers a re-engineered newsroom plug-in that streamlines the preparation process, allowing productions to get to air faster, with less effort and fewer mistakes. Version 14.0 also adds customer driven features like trailing audio support, color coding to easily identify incoming MOS elements, automated multi-platform publishing, and a remote database option for multi-site production.

Inception Social Media Management
Inception Social Media Management allows clients to take control of social media, providing a single tool to create, publish and incorporate content from Twitter, Facebook or the web into productions. Inception adds new social features and workflow enhancements for IBC. Inception social publishing now includes Flickr as a destination.  For incoming social content, Inception now supports feeds from both Flickr and Mass Relevance while supporting image upload in Inception Playlists. New workflow tools include additional shortcut keys and a powerful blacklisted words filter.

Virtual Sets & Augmented Reality
Ross once again raises the bar in trade show floor productions with Ross World Sport, a 10-minute sport-themed live show that showcases virtual sets and augmented reality.  Using a whole catalog of Ross products, including  XPression Real-Time Motion Graphics, Furio Robotic Camera Systems, OverDrive Automated Production Control, Vision Production Switchers, Inception Social Media Management, openGear Delay Cards, BlackStorm Video Servers, and Unreel UX Touchscreen Control, customers will be able to see the new “reality” of virtual production.

New this year is the incorporation of a hard-set element from partner, Erector Sets, Inc.  This practical set allows for better visualization of augmented reality, which is defined as adding virtual elements to an existing physical set.  In addition, there is seamless integration between the hard set and a green-screen virtual set wing, also designed by Erector Sets.  This illustrates how a small set in a small studio can be expanded, virtually, to a much larger on-air environment.

XPression Real-time Motion Graphics
XPression continues its evolution as the new standard in real-time motion graphics at IBC 2013.  Version 5.0 brings a whole host of new products and software releases that give enhanced functionality and more graphics horsepower to XPression users at all levels.

The most significant enhancement to XPression at IBC this year is the new FX Engine.  This new effects framework allows users to enhance real-time 3D animation with powerful post effects, such as – motion blur, light rays, warps, wipes, custom drop shadows, and more.  The FX Engine also adds depth-of-field and lens distortion to make virtual sets and augmented reality even more believable.

XPression Connect is a new social media player application that provides the missing link between moderated message feeds and on-air graphics playout.  User can “connect” to multiple data streams and instantly turn them into on-air playlists, or drag and drop selected messages into custom playlists.  There are options to crawl or tick the items and also whether or not to use avatar images.  Connect includes support for the most popular social media providers, including Mass Relevance and Ross Inception.

XPression Prime GO! Is a new edition of XPression that supports Thunderbolt-enabled laptops and external video I/O devices for the ultimate in portable real-time graphics solutions.  Prime GO! outputs video, key, and audio directly to video switchers without lossy compression.  It’s also frame accurate for incorporation into complex switcher effects with RossTalk, P-bus, or GPI protocols.

IBC 2013 also sees the release of a new 64-bit XPression NLE plug-in.  The updated software allows editors to have full access to XPression templates, edit text, and replace graphics, all from the latest 64-bit editing applications.

For the sport world, the XPression DataLinq Server now supports enhanced Excel, XML, and database connectivity, which provides the ability to lookup players by record number or user-definable data keys, without creating hundreds of pages with hard links.  Data Pages also allow users to “pop” data into on-air templates on-the-fly.

There are several enhancements to MOS news workflow this year, too.  Version 5.2 of the Ross Video Signature Series by MediaBeacon asset/order management system offers a number of new features, including the ability to play XPression video clip proxies directly in the browser and checkerboard pattern alpha channel visualization.  The new XPression Desktop Preview Server also enables operators to see previews of any number of XPression systems on the network in one user-configurable screen.

Furio and CamBot Robotic Camera Systems
Both Furio and CamBot will be showing at this year’s IBC including the new VR-600 Robotic Head and FRO-600 Furio System which provides a higher payload, quieter, rail-based system with tracking output for Augmented Reality and Virtual Sets.

Also showing is the new Ross Legislative Control System (LCS) which will be shown controlling the CamBot 500 Series. In a legislative environment, the LCS steers cameras, switches video and audio and brings up graphics all automatically via a simple touch screen user interface.  The interface is very visual and is customizable to the exact layout required.

Ross Video Adds SqueezeBack to the World’s most Compact Master Control Switcher

2013 Press Releases, NK, openGearon April 8th, 2013

Monday, April 8, 2013 [Iroquois, ON, Canada] – Launched in 2012, the MC1 gets new features at NAB 2013 including on-air 2D squeeze back, voice over audio mixing and new EAS interfaces along with other enhancements. All of these new features are available at no charge to existing MC1 customers through a simple software upgrade.

MC1 Master ControlThe MC1 is a complete master control switcher on a single openGear card. It is fully featured and includes video mixing and keying, onboard animated logo storage and playout, relay program bypass protection, 16 channels of audio mixing, EAS and Amber Alert crawl generation and more.

“Last year at NAB we shocked the broadcast industry with the most affordable master control solution on the market,” said Brad Plant, Marketing Product Manager for Infrastructure and Video Servers, Ross Video. “As a dedicated hardware based solution, the MC1 offers robustness and reliability not found in PC based solutions – yet it’s more compact and cost effective than the traditional large dedicated master control systems.”

The MC1 has been designed to be integrated with virtually any plant routing system, in turn gaining direct access to router sources, and offering easy integration with the customers choice of automation system. An intuitive touch screen control panel allows for manual operator intervention when required.

EAS insertion, Standalone Squeeze, Standalone VoiceOver
Also new to MC1 is the systems ability to be used with or without a routing matrix. This makes MC1 ideal for cost effective stand-alone add-ons to existing systems, performing squeeze back effects, EAS insertion, audio and voice over, or stand-alone branding and keying in situations where a full blown master control switcher is not required.
