Ross Video Announces the Industry’s First Modular 12G-SDI Distribution Amplifier in Collaboration with MACOM and Amphenol

2016 Press Releases, openGearon April 18th, 2016

Three-Way Collaboration Enables the Industry’s First 12G-SDI Modular Platform with a Passive Rear Interface

Monday, April 18th, 2016 [Las Vegas, NV] – Ross Video, a leading supplier of live production solutions, today announced in collaboration with Amphenol and MACOM, a new series of 12G-SDI modular distribution solutions. This solution would not have been possible without utilizing MACOM’s 12G SDI chipset and Amphenol’s latest 12G connectors. This three-way collaboration enables the next generation modular signal processing products to support fully SMPTE compliant single link interfaces for 4K video support.

“This is a very big step for the broadcast video industry,” said Gary Shah, Vice President of Marketing, High-Performance Analog, MACOM. “The openGear platform was prolific with a 3G-SDI interface, and we are pleased to work with partners like Ross Video and Amphenol to deliver the first 12G SDI platform.”

Through the collaboration with Amphenol and MACOM, Ross Video can now offer customers a family of 12G-SDI distribution solutions for their openGear modular platform, featuring a rear interface panel with no active components. This gives customers the ability to remove and replace cards in the frame without needing to disconnect cables from the rear panel. Ross Video’s openGear platform, which received a Technical Emmy at the 67th annual Technology & Engineering Emmy awards, was designed to provide the broadcast industry with an open and universal platform for signal processing cards.

Ross Video recognized that the challenge with a modular platform is maintaining the expectation that the all active components reside on the front removable card with no active components in the frame or on the rear connecting module nor is it acceptable to directly connect cables to the front module. By implementing the unique solution co-developed with MACOM and Amphenol, Ross Video was able to achieve maximum performance by keeping critical components as close as possible to the cable interface without passing through any intermediate connections.

“This challenge was insurmountable with currently available technology. Ross Video is pleased to have great technology partners in MACOM and Amphenol, who through an excellent working relationship are jointly able to overcome these challenges and deliver cutting-edge 12G-SDI solutions for delivery of 4K / UHD. The challenge of getting 12G-SDI into a modular platform, without requiring active components on the rear of the frame, has now be solved,” said Eric Goodmurphy, Director of Infrastructure at Ross Video.

“It has been an exciting opportunity to collaborate with the visionary team from Ross Video and MACOM in developing an interconnect solution that combines our latest technologies for the broadcast market, HD-BNC and HD-AFI, to meet the challenges involved with single port 12G transmission.” said Hardik Parikh, National Program Manager at Amphenol RF.

MACOM’s 2nd generation 12G SDI products will be available for private demonstration at NAB 2016, Booth #N602,April 18-21st in the Las Vegas Convention Center. To make an appointment, contact your local sales representative. For more information on MACOM’s broad portfolio visit: www.macom.com.

Ross Video’s openGear platform is available for demonstration at NAB 2016, booth N3705.

Ross Video and Embrionix to Demonstrate JPEG 2000 IP Transport Solutions at NAB 2015

2015 Press Releases, openGearon April 9th, 2015

Thursday, April 9th, 2015 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] – Ross Video and Embrionix jointly announced today that they will be showing openGear modules that provide SMPTE ST-2022- 2/ TR-01 compliant, JPEG 2000 (J2K) over IP transport using new Embrionix J2K decoder Small Form Factor Pluggable Transceiver (SFP) technology.

Embrionix LogoRoss plans to offer a new line of openGear J2K products based on this technology as the new SFPs become available from Embrionix.  These openGear modules will provide high quality, low latency video connections between locations connected via IP transport, providing a good solution for links from remote venues, between studios and across campuses.

“These modules will provide a nice complement to our live production focus.  They fill a need of many of our clients to move real time video over IP networks while maintaining quality and keeping latency low,” noted Eric Goodmurphy, Director of Infrastructure Products for Ross Video. “Since we already use SFP modules on our existing base-band uncompressed fiber portfolio, it is proving relatively easy to adapt these to IP by simply plugging in these new Embrionix SFPs and integrating software control.”

The patented fiber Ross Lock feature will be maintained on these modules.  Ross Lock provides a blind-mate fiber connection on the rear of the openGear frame, keeping active components off the rear and allowing quick hot-swap of modules from the front while ensuring signal integrity is preserved at the fiber connection.

“We are excited to partner with Ross Video in the development of SDI to IP SFPs – such as J2K IP transport. We see a good synergy between the Embrionix SFPs and the popular openGear platform,” commented Renaud Lavoie, CEO of Embrionix.  “Ross’ ability to quickly implement this technology is an example of the power of our modular SFP solutions.”

Ross Acuity Takes Over for Synergy at LCBC Church

2015 Press Releases, Acuity, BlackStrom, openGearon March 2nd, 2015

Monday, March 2, 2015 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] – After 11 successful years with Ross Video’s Synergy switcher, LCBC Church in Lancaster, PA recently upgraded to HD with Ross’ new flagship Acuity switcher in their broadcast campus – their first campus out of six.

LCBC Church

“We are incredibly happy with the longevity of our Synergy 2 switcher that we originally installed in 2003,” says Sean McDermott, Production Manager for LCBC. “Even though Synergy still functioned well for us, we had been planning for an HD upgrade for over 3 years, and knew our first step into becoming 1080p would be replacing the backbone of our system with Acuity – which has become our main venue switcher and video router.”

LCBC uses Acuity to control side and center screens in their main campus auditorium which seats 2300, as well as switch a lockdown camera along with the Main Venue IMAG feed which is then broadcast via satellite to their multisite campuses to watch live.  Prior to Acuity, LCBC had to switch their lockdown shot using an aux switcher in a separate room. Now, they can switch their lockdown on the same switcher.

Along with the Acuity switcher, LCBC also invested in Ross’ BlackStorm Playout Server to roll clips and a lot of openGear for signal processing.

“Knowing this equipment has a long life expectancy, we know we can get a significant return on our investment,” continues McDermott. “We installed a 3G switcher with 4K capabilities knowing this switcher could very well be in place in our venue in 2025. Also having openGear with such a low failure rate reduces the time my team has to spend troubleshooting or repairing gear. We can focus on our five other campus venues and ensure our church community has an excellent experience they can invite their friends, family and coworkers too.”

Ross Video: What’s New at IBC 2014

2014 Press Releases, Acuity, BlackStrom, Carbonite, DashBoard, Inception, Nielsen, NK, openGear, OverDrive, Robotics, XPressionon July 15th, 2014

Tuesday July 15, 2014 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] – Since last IBC, Ross has expanded dramatically with 4 corporate acquisitions in the areas of routing, news and prompting software, augmented reality and mobile production and a wide array of new production focused products and services as well as the addition of almost 100 new employees.  This IBC, Ross is celebrating its 40th anniversary, sporting a new look with a modernized corporate logo and the updated tagline: “Production Technology Experts”.  Following is a brief outline of just some of the things to expect from Ross on the stand at IBC in September – and as always, there will be a few last minute surprises announced closer to show time.

openTruck™ – Next Generation Mobile Production
openTruck™ brings innovation to mobile production by providing a standardized yet customizable way to design a new generation of cost-effective remote-production vehicles that deliver the highest quality video and audio content from sports and other live events. A mobile production vehicle, built to the openTruck specifications will be front and center on the Ross stand at IBC.

Acuity – Breakthrough High End Production Switching
Introduced at NAB 2014 and now fully released and shipping, the Acuity production switcher is the latest large production switcher platform. It delivers fast, efficient and error-free production for all formats including UHD (4K) and is ergonomically perfect and stunningly beautiful. The culmination of 40-years’ production switcher design experience, Acuity combines seemingly limitless production power with aesthetic beauty and unprecedented connectivity. No matter what your vision is for the future of your production facility, Acuity will help you lead the way.

Carbonite – The World’s Most Popular Mid-Sized Production Switcher
The award-winning Carbonite production switcher now has more choice and flexibility than ever before with 3G and Advanced UHD (4K) production shipping on new systems and also available to all Carbonite customers through free software upgrades.  These features enable Carbonite to be switched to 3G (1080P 50 or 60 (59.94)) and open the door to the very latest production format: UHDTV (4K) – a capability used by Globosat, Brazil in the recent FIFA World Cup.

Another unexpected free software upgrade to Carbonite is 2.5 ME operation, with two new 3 ME panels available to provide direct access to this additional horsepower—the 3S and 3X— bringing the total number of Carbonite control panel choices to nine.

Inception – The Modern Newsroom Computer System
Inception is “the new kid in town” in newsroom editorial systems and has made a big impression since its introduction last IBC, winning major industry awards for the innovative approach it takes to creating multi-platform content.  Inception enables your operation to truly embrace social media and the web – making them equal partners alongside your linear channel in your content creation efforts.  Designed to handle the modern needs of News, Sports and Entertainment production, Inception is a must see at IBC this year.

Inception Social – Social Media Management Made Easy
Inception Social is a social media management system that can either work standalone or can be “plugged in” to an existing newsroom computer system.  In addition to news environments, Inception Social has found a place in live event social media management for entertainment productions and sports where it provides a tight link between audience feedback (tweets, polls and pictures) and live on-air production graphics.

XPression – The New Standard in Real-Time Motion Graphics
XPression keeps getting more powerful and flexible with solutions that meet virtually every type of onscreen live graphics need—from character generation to virtual sets and augmented reality.  XPression has added Visual Scripting, making the creation of dynamic, data-driven graphics much faster and easier.   Visual Scripting complements XPressions powerful scripting capability with an intuitive drag and drop operator user interface eliminating the need to write programming scripts in most cases.

A few more new solutions planned for the XPression family at IBC this year include:

  • XPression Tick-it and Tick-it Solo: Next-generation ticker systems with collaborative browser-based data entry and scheduling.
  • XPression Brand-it: Multi-channel automated branding workflow server for program lineups, snipes and more.
  • XPression Studio and BlueBox GO!: Powerful XPression solutions for Thunderbolt™ laptops.

Stop by and see a demo of what the state-of-the-art studio of the future looks like.

Furio RC and Furio Robo – Advanced Track Based Robotic Camera Systems
Ross Video’s rail-based remote-control camera system, Furio RC, has a new control option that makes controlling the Furio similar to controlling a manual camera. The Furio Panbar controller has a fluid head for pan, tilt, zoom and focus, and foot pedals for dolly and lift, making it easier to get those dramatic production shots the Furio RC is famous for. A new collision avoidance option enables two Furio Robo Systems to safely share a single track, maximizing flexibility and the ability to attain the best camera shots.

OverDrive Caprica – Automated Production
OverDrive, the worlds most popular system for automating news production is now shipping with a new version called OverDrive Caprica which adds support for 3rd party (non-Ross) production switchers.  This allows customers with installed legacy production switchers to make the move to automation without having to replace their production switcher.

MC1 – The Affordable Master Control Solution
The MC1 simple, robust and affordable Master Control System has added an optional physical control panel that is fully customizable and supports scalable multi-channel operations. The MC1 System is now also available as a standalone openGear module for channel branding and emergency alert system insertion.

openGear 3.0 – The World’s Only Open Terminal Equipment Platform
Ross will be demonstrating the openGear 3.0 frame, this third generation open frame standard offers increased density, power, cooling and advanced network control while maintaining backward compatibility with previous generation openGear cards.  Earlier this year, the openGear ecosystem passed 60 partner companies continuing to broaden the range of available openGear compliant solutions.

Ross openGear portfolio has added a 3G advanced VANC data processor with support for SCTE 104 Digital Program Insertion (DPI); a 3G A/V Frame Synchronizer with audio embedding/de-embedding capabilities; and a fiber optic 3G A/V Frame Synchronizer with audio embedding/ de-embedding support making it ideal for mixed format Electrical / Optical Installations.

With front swappable redundant power supplies and an optional auto changeover unit, the SRG-4400 provides the features and reliability needed in a modern facility timing system.

NK Series Routing Systems
New in NK Series Routing includes customer definable DashBoard-based soft panels – making router control available from any computer.  These CustomPanels can combine control of a variety of Ross and 3rd party equipment at the same time – streamlining user operation.

Nielsen Watermarks – Audience Measurement Systems
Ross is Nielsen’s partner in providing and supporting the equipment needed by broadcasters to insert Nielsen Watermarks for audience measurement. Ross now offers the NWE-TS which can watermark signals in the compressed domain. The NWE-TS accepts ATSC ASI transport streams and will watermark up to 10 channels simultaneously.

Black Storm – Video Clip Player
At IBC this year, BlackStorm adds support for Avid’s DNxHD codec offering smoother workflow for Avid-centric environments.

DashBoard – Facility Control and Monitoring
DashBoard is Ross’ Facility Control and Monitoring System and is available for free download from the Ross Video website.  DashBoard 6.2, now in beta, will launch at IBC and includes some big upgrades to the system including a more sophisticated version of the popular PanelBuilder feature.  PanelBuilder allows the easy creation of customized touch screen control panels that can take a complex operation and make it simple for the operator.   PanelBuilder can include individual buttons, sliders and indicators from any openGear, DashBoard Connect and Ross Video product as well as a number of 3rd party devices – combining these with scripting intelligence in powerful and unique ways.

2014 Press Releases, Carbonite, DashBoard, openGearon July 14th, 2014

Monday July 14, 2014 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] – Today, Ross Video announced that India’s newly launched 24×7 news channel, 99% TV, had chosen to invest in Carbonite production switchers with built-in MultiViewers and other Ross infrastructure for its new news studios.

MC1“We carefully examined all our options, but the Ross Video products blew the competition away with their superior performance, cost effectiveness and reliability,” said Mr. Kapil, 99% TV’s Chief Executive Officer. “The support system Ross has in place here in India is also very strong and I was impressed by their technical support, which is second to none.”

As well as using Carbonite production switchers, 99% TV is also using Ross Video’s MC1 master control system, DashBoard and openGear.

It also delivers exceptional value for money as well as an extended five-year warranty.”

99% TV is using its Ross Video infrastructure for all its on-air news programs, including discussions, debate shows and personal interviews. In the future, the station is also planning to produce game shows.

Mongolia National Broadcaster Upgrades Facility
and Programming with Ross

2014 Press Releases, Carbonite, Inception, NK, openGear, XPressionon April 21st, 2014

Monday, April 21st, 2014 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] – Mongolia National Broadcaster (MNB), a state-funded television channel in Mongolia upgraded from analog to digital broadcasting using Ross Video Production Technology.

MNBMNB wanted to provide their viewers with a better experience, while changing the look and feel of their programming. MNB accepted Global Telecom’s tender and began their introduction to Ross Video’s Carbonite Production Switcher, XPression Character Generator and Graphics System, Inception News Newsroom Control System, MC1 Master Control System, openGear Terminal Equipment and NK Series Router.

“Our first experience with Ross Video began 15 years ago with a purchase of an RVS 216A Analog Production Switcher – which still works perfectly to this day,” said Mr. Temuujin. S, Head of Engineering, MNB. “In order for MNB to successfully go digital, we needed to invest in a lot of new equipment. After requesting tenders from local vendors, Global Telecom won with the recommendation of Ross technology – and a decision that has proven to be an easy transition.”

While still awaiting installation of a few products – XPression, NK Series and Inception News – MC1 has proven to be the straightforward master control switcher MNB required. Carbonite is also fulfilling all of their production requirements.

“Carbonite allows us to produce our programs more effectively, as well as plan for more programming moving forward,” continued Mr. Temuujin. “While the initial investment was high, the built-in features such as the Chroma Keyer and MultiViewer saved us money – and space. Our operators are truly enjoying everything Carbonite has to offer and can’t wait for the rest of our Ross equipment to be up and running.
