CTV Newsnet Increases News Production with OverDrive

Iroquois, ON, Canada – March 14, 2006 – Ross Video announced today CTV Newsnet, Canada’s 24-hour News Network, has invested in the OverDrive Production Control System as part of a new studio facility to increase news production.

“Newsnet recently received approval to go live unrestricted by the CRTC and is no longer required to follow a 15 minute program wheel. The end result will be to increase more immediate and comprehensive news stories,” said Steve Coulter, Director, Technical Operations, CTV Television. “The transformation gives us an opportunity to reconstruct the control room with new technology to increase efficiencies. OverDrive will allow us to build elements on the fly in and out of live and recorded programming. We reviewed other control systems and none offered the same flexibility, plus Ross backs their products with excellent service.”

OverDrive, including a Synergy production switcher, will be installed in the CTV Newsnet facilities at CTV headquarters in Toronto with an on-air date scheduled for summer of 2006. This is the second OverDrive system in the CTV organization, the first system being used by RDS in Montreal for production of the 24-hour RIS sports channel. CTV Newsnet programming facilities include: 15 local newsrooms across Canada, the national newsroom of its sister network, CTV, and nine foreign news bureaus in major centers around the world.

“We are delighted CTV Newsnet has chosen OverDrive to maximize news coverage and improve workflow efficiency,” said Brad Rochon, OverDrive Product Manager, Ross Video. “The tight integration of OverDrive, Synergy, the newsroom system and all external devices is the ideal solution for the new CTV Newsnet format and will easily accommodate their live breaking news requirements.“

OverDrive™ is a highly flexible production control system with a LiveLink™ MOS interface to newsroom editorial systems. Using the extensive device control capabilities of Synergy digital production switchers, OverDrive extends the reach of the technical director to include control of video servers, audio mixers, robotic cameras and more. The centralized control offered by OverDrive™ gives the ability to execute a more consistent, sophisticated production on the air without increasing staffing levels.
