Ease of Use Makes Ross Switchers the Right Choice for the Community Education Channel

Stanley Everett
General Manager/Executive Director
Community Education Channel
St. George, Utah
We represent the cities of St. George, Washington, Santa Clara and Ivins, Utah as well as Dixie State College of Utah and the Washington County School District. We are an Educational/ Governmental Access Channel which serves the Southwest corner of the state of Utah. Since we are located 100 miles from Las Vegas, Nevada and 318 miles from Salt Lake City, Utah we are the only station that deals with issues of local interest. What is news to us is not news to the larger market television stations located in these cities.
Our production crews come from the students we educate at the local high schools and the state college. Recently, we started doing live remote broadcasts using our remote production truck, of college sporting events for KSL/ KCSG-TV out of Salt Lake City. To do these games, the station provides a producer and director, the rest of our crew are students from our program. This is a remarkable relationship since the students learn by working side by side with working media professionals. A marriage between education and industry, who would of thought it!! Many hours before and after shoots have been spent in personal counseling and teaching.
Due to the fact that we work in education, we have to be extremely cautious about what equipment we purchase and how reliable it will be. After examining the Ross Switchers, we decided on the Ross RVS 210A. Because we work with students who come to us with little if any experience we had to select equipment that was easy to learn and even easier to use in pressure situations. The Ross Switcher was the answer.
Training and service have been excellent. When we have encountered a problem the service department has been able to solve our problem over the telephone. The problems have always been operator error, nothing to do with the switcher.
Two years later, we purchased our second Ross Switcher (RVS 216A). It has also given us great service. And because we program our own channel 24/7, there is not a day that our fixed facility and/or remote truck is not producing programming for the channel. I am happy to say that we have not missed a production date in over 6 years of operation due to switcher failure.
Because of this kind of performance and the need to move our productions to the next level, we are now looking to purchase our third Ross Switcher, the Synergy Two. Because of our close proximity to Las Vegas, Nevada, we take a number of our Technical Director students to NAB every year. Without any guidance, these students came back to school raving about the Ross Synergy. They loved the ease of operation, the Squeeze and Tease, over-the-shoulder boxes, etc..., etc... All we heard on the way home was "we could doÉ and then we could do ..."
Needless to say they were impressed and so was I.
We shoot everything from city council meetings, concerts, lectures, high school and college sporting events to public affairs programming -- and I love the versatility of the Synergy Switchers.
Our beginnings were small and very basic. Our viewers have been extremely loyal and supportive and as such are encouraging us to move up to the next level of performance. It is my personal belief that the Ross Digital Production Switchers will move us to that level.
Thanks for listening.
