Tele-Quebec, a public television network, has its main production center in Montreal. There are three studios that are used for our own programming and by freelance producers.
The Synergy is our third generation of Ross switchers. We have an analog RVS-508 (bought in 1985) in our smallest studio, and an analog RVS-630 (bought in 1993) in our largest.
The Ross Synergy 3 was purchased as part of a transformation project for our medium size studio to digital component. It replaces a Ross RVS 508 analog switcher.
When looking for a switcher, we also considered the Grass 4000, the Sony DVC-7250 and the Phillips DD-30. Synergy offered some unique benefits such as; a small rack frame (only 11RU), control panel growth path, great Custom Macros (with 32 direct access buttons), VTR control, and flexible keyers. Also, the Ross was by far the lowest priced.
Michel Campeau, our Chief Video Switcher, says the training was easy. The operation philosophy is the same as the previous Ross switchers and the Technical Manuals are simple and comprehensive.
The switcher has been used for a variety of productions including children's programs, public affairs, and a fast-moving Improvisation show with multiple keys and effects.
Our pre-sale and post-sale experiences with Ross has always been great and helpful.
We purchased the Synergy when it was barely a released product, with some of the features not yet implemented and a few bugs to iron out.
Feedback from Ross' product manager was generally quick and satisfactory. Our installation went very well.
Denis Caron, Tele-Quebec's Technical Maintenance Supervisor, says that the stability and reliability of Ross switchers are totally impressive. Even the old analog RVS-508 does not need preventive maintenance.
