Bay City Start-up Chooses RossGear for Value

Bay City TV is the Fox Television station serving San Diego (XETV-FOX 6). In 1999, we completed the layout of a new technical facility and studio for the launch of a 10PM thirty-minute newscast. Since the premiere of our 10PM newscast, we have also launched a three-hour morning show and a thirty-minute noon newscast.

We are the sixth station to enter the local news arena in San Diego. The market has a reputation for producing high quality newscasts and is extremely competitive. Our goal is to produce a newscast with a better than network quality look while maintaining the ability to present our stories quickly, with depth, and reliably. The facility design and engineering was outsourced to TV Magic and my responsibility was to coordinate the project with them.

As a news start-up, we had no pre-existing terminal gear and required signal distribution equipment, Digital to Analog converters and format conversion equipment. We chose RossGear primarily for the value. By going with Ross, we were able to get more of what we needed at substantial cost savings. We looked at terminal equipment from both Leitch and Grass Valley Group. But, the deciding factors were value and availability.

Installation of the RossGear was not difficult at all. All RossGear arrived in a timely manner and our installation was right on schedule. If we did find any problems with the Gear, replacements were sent out quickly and with very little trouble.

We use RossGear for signal distribution and conversion for our News Department. And the Ross equipment has been a steady performer. We have had very few problems and customer support has been there for us if we have needed any support or just had a question.

Because we were on a very demanding and tight install schedule, with a number of twists and curves along the way, the project required a constant and open line of communication with all of our equipment vendors. Ross sales and support were right on top of any change orders as they came up and equipment was always shipped in time for installation requirements.

The bottom line is, we never even know that RossGear is there. And that's the way it should be. It has been steady and reliable
