Introduction
Telemundo Puerto Rico (WKAQ-2) is a prominent broadcaster based in San Juan
Owned and operated by the Telemundo Station Group, a subsidiary of NBCUniversal. No stranger to pushing the boundaries of broadcasting, they undertook an ambitious new project to enhance their 2024 election night coverage.

The Challenge
The goal was to maximize audience engagement and stand out by moving beyond traditional graphics and leveraging the most advanced visual technology.
With a focus on real-time election data, the team wanted to deliver results in an immersive way that emphasized the grandeur of this historic election. Their vision was a visually stunning mixed-reality experience that used the outside of the studio as part of the set, using aerial drone shots to create an atmospheric backdrop. This added a layer of complexity to an already ambitious production.

The Solution
Ross Video’s Rocket Surgery team worked closely with Telemundo Puerto Rico o
Over the preceding months to bring their vision to life. Combining Ross Video’s XPression graphics engine for insert graphics and live results tickers with Voyager and Lucid to power the AR visuals made the workflow integration simple and reliable. On the night, Rocket Surgery deployed and operated custom drones to capture the external footage.

The Impact
Thanks to the dedication of the Telemundo PR and Rocket Surgery teams, the 2024 election broadcast was an outstanding success.
The production transformed real-time election data into an immersive experience that made the entire studio (and some of the surrounding city) part of the set. The result was a captivating election broadcast that kept audiences engaged throughout the evening. The AR integration brought dynamism to the graphics and kept viewers engaged. And the addition of drone footage added a fresh perspective that helped Telemundo’s coverage stand out from its competitors.
