A New Spin On Clip Servers from Ross Video at IBC

Wednesday, September 9th, 2015 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] – Ross Video will be showing XPression Clips, their new production clip server, at IBC 2015. Based on the industry leading XPression real-time graphics engine, XPression Clips eliminates pre-rolls with instant recalls and an intuitive user interface. Support for multiple forms of automation control is standard, including integration with Ross switchers.
Users may also add full CG functionality with the XPression Studio upgrade, combining real-time 3D graphics with video and graphic clips in the same device. “The world of live production is evolving to the point where having a box that only does one thing is not an option,” said Brian Olson, Director of Marketing Product Management for XPression. “In addition to cost-savings, the added value of having interactivity between graphics and clips in a single system is huge.” XPression Clips also plays back video inside of XPression materials, so it’s possible to recall clips into virtual monitors in VS/AR implementations on the fly.
The ClipStore database with user rights management keeps track of all metadata and can synchronize with other ClipStores in a facility. It’s also possible to run multiple XPression Clips systems off of a single ClipStore that resides on a NAS or SAN. Multi-channel ingest and playout from a single system is supported, and along with “crash record,” Clips has a file-based workflow for manual or automated ingest of content.
The companion XPression INcoder application transcodes files from popular file formats into the super-efficient XPression codec – offering amazing quality, small file sizes, support for 16 channels of audio, and embedded alpha channels. Intelligent watch folders make using INcoder transparent to the user. After the transcode process, INcoder delivers the clip to a network location or registers it in one or more ClipStore databases for immediate recall. “We wanted to put an end to the codec wars,” said Olson. “Every codec has a different amount of overhead required to decode, and we wanted to have consistent performance and reliability with XPression Clips, so INcoder made a lot of sense.”
In addition to live production, XPression Clips will be supported in the next release of the XPression MOS Plug-in. Journalists will be able to select a Clips tab from their plug-in window, browse for content, and add clips directly into their stories. Integration with Ross Streamline for a higher level of asset management is also underway.
