Camera Robotics Pioneer Miles Spellman Retires

Monday, December 23, 2013 [Iroquois, Ontario, Canada] – After a long and distinguished career in broadcast engineering, Miles Spellman is retiring to become an international man of leisure. Miles retirement plans include traveling, spending time with his family and enjoying his retirement.

Miles SpellmanMiles specialty over the years has been the software that controls robotic camera systems. He wrote control software for the first fully roaming broadcast pedestal systems for a company called TSM – a feat that broadcast veterans will remember. These systems astonished crowds at NAB, freely roaming the studio and expertly executing camera shots for news productions.

Miles and his colleague Bob Scotto – who worked alongside Miles engineering the mechanics behind the TSM system – decided to branch off and start their own company, Cambotics.  At Cambotics, together they designed a new generation of highly accurate and reliable robotic camera systems, patenting a whole new drive system. Miles personally wrote all of the control and user interface software, helping Cambotics build a reputation for solid and reliable systems. Over the next few years, Cambotics developed a loyal following of customers in spite of spending virtually no money on sales or marketing!

After 8 years with Cambotics, and in preparation for retirement, Miles Spellman and Bob Scotto sold Cambotics to Ross Video in 2011. Ross Robotics has since grown in leaps and bounds with Ross scaling the business, and significantly adding to engineering, manufacturing and technical support of the Ross “CamBot” line.

With the transition successfully executed, and a new team of software developers in place, the path is now clear for Miles to retire. Bob Scotto continues to work on new camera robotics projects with Ross, with no plans of retirement yet.

Congratulations Miles! Your colleagues at Ross Video and throughout the industry will miss you. Miles plans to be at NAB 2014 in “retirement mode” for those that would like to buy him a retirement beverage.
